Oh this boy of ours !

Reubs has split another nail right to the quick  Vet is going to try and sedate him , it didnt work last time as he was too bouncy but they are going to sedate him in the car and then leave him for a short while ( in the car ) and hope he goes to sleep, if not its GA yet again , this will be Monday morning . They are hoping to just remove the shard and leave the rest of the nail , depending how firm the main nail is . Its only three months since he did the same on a front paw nail , I could scream xx

Can't they just numb the area. My old vet used to deaden Doug's affected toe then remove the nail. If we had to GA every time it would have been multiple times. Doug knew what was happening and found it less stressful that way. We just did it carefully and the vet let me hold him. Once it was numb he was fine. I was just so hard for him but at least I could hold him my arms.

If it is SLO it's often kinder to let them run through mud. At one stage in the disease the nails will peel off like banana skins it's called hooding as in open car bonnets. The nails come off easily so I'd find him some thick mud and they'd get sucked off. Sounds mean but it was quick and he did not notice it. SLO quicks die back quickly and are powdery. The nail middles die back and the nails look hollow

SLO was something I was going to chat to the Vet about on Monday , I`ve also started Reuben on Salmon Oil as I read that fatty acids can help .The mud is very interesting , we have plenty of mud at the moment ! xx

You need mega strength stuff unfortunately salmon oil won't really cut it. I found the vet could prescribe more concentrated stuff. Biotin can help along with brewers yeast. If it is SLO join a FB group there's lots of ideas out there and new treatments. I've sent you some photos privately. It's more common than some people realise. Often it's just an odd nail.

Oh b***** Kate. Poor boy.

What's that?
it is an auto immune disease called symmetrical lupoid oncodystrophy. It makes the body attack its own tissue. So the nails fall off in a very painful way the quicks rot and become infected. It also damaged circulation gait and is extremely painful when it's active. It can vary greatly in severity. It can also be part of a larger lupus illness.

Having mulled everything over at some silly o`clock , like you do , I`ve come to the conclusion that I`m less than happy to accept the nurses decision that Reuben may need the whole nail removing . I am pleased that Sue will be there to oversee things on Monday morning and before committing to anything , I want a good chat with her first . I know its split right to the quick but really would like just the broken piece removing if this is possible . Obviously if this leaves him open to infection , I can see why maybe the whole nail removal might be the best option but also want to ask about ways to do this without GA . Reubs doesnt do well after GA, so I dread it , I dont want to cast doubts on the capability of the nurse but would far prefer a good chat with the Vet first xx

It's good to make sure you're making the best decision for him. It's great that Sue will be there on Monday to oversee things, and it's definitely a good idea to have a chat with her before committing to anything.

Trust your instincts and don’t feel like you're casting doubt on anyone's capability. Your top priority is Reuben's health and well-being, and you have every right to ask questions and seek out the best possible care for him. All the best for your chat with the vet and that Reuben makes a full and speedy recovery.

Hugs and Lambies xx
