    Trixie

Trixie is 2 now training is going well, though she’s reactive on a harness. Fine any other time just on a harness. I’m using it to take her on free walks, to try and work on that park. Oh and the window barking. Ugh. But it’s not aggressive….she just has to tell me about every single passing...

    Trixie

Finally starting to see the yard take shape. Shamas joined Trixie and I outside as the weather is nice. He took up his place on the porch. I've laid him an anti-fatigue mat to lay on while he watches the goings on. I've built a temporary 6 foot fence from old leftover wood from a fence we took...

    Trixie

Starting to see some progress in confidence building. I've been having her out on the long line and harness in the field, and woods. This affords her opportunities to see dogs and joggers at a distance and be rewarded for disengaging without my having to intervene. I saw the benefit this...

    Trixie

I've come to the conclusion that we are going to need a reliable GPS on the kid She's downright primordial lol. If she ever gets out of the yard for more that 5 minutes, I figure she'll head straight for the nearest wilderness I'm wondering about an air tag.. but I have read that they...

Why the long line? I finally get it

I have always been confused as to why a long line is so often recommend for reactive dogs. It seems counterproductive to me, giving too much space, and therefore time for the reactive dog to without guidance make a decision of their own and react. But I had a reactive dog who needed to be...

    Trixie

Some pics I got during our loose leash session . Trixie walked really well, except passing by the corner house. The dog was out, and she wanted to rush the fence...so she was prancing at a 45degree angle, towards the fence lol. I took her out as far as the middle of the road to give her space...

    Reactivity post spay

I feel you. Shamas was so far gone when we got him, and my own inexperience made it worse. I have relished having a dog I can take places, and I really hope that she does not have her bubble grow to the size Shamas was......his was a good 100 feet to start with. Couldn't take him anywhere...

    Reactivity post spay

I believe that the month of near isolation has a lot to do with it. I said to hubby yesterday, when I had his drive me to the dog park, that we'd have work ahead, to undo the effects of all that time shut away. Add to that, we don't know anyone with small children, so she's only really seen...

    Reactivity post spay

I had read that spay/neuter could bring out underlying reactivity. Trixie is a little nervy. SO I was ready to potentially deal with this, or something else. I was expecting dog reactivity to be honest, given her arousal levels around dogs. So far, although excited, she's been not too bad there...

    Trixie

And so begins another year of socialization. As Trixie has had less social than is ideal winter, she is beginning to get very excited when she sees other dogs. And walking her on a back clipped harness, I'm relying on her ability to listen to me. I don't find that harnesses give me much...

    Trixie

We're back to "normal" now. I say this in quotations because it's still cold outside, so we're still somewhat limited on walks. While Shamas has his big overcoat to cover his hips...I find that cold weather leaves him cranky. Then he gets resource guardy. We had an interesting situation the...

Co-operative care for ear drops. Could someone please break down the steps for me?

Jelinga, Trixie is not the kind of dog you trick more than once lol. No...I'll need to teach her to accept the treatment, not try to hide it. Even her pills, though they are coated to make them more palatable, are not disguised. She knows they are there. If I hid them, she'd eat around them...

Co-operative care for ear drops. Could someone please break down the steps for me?

That's my goal. I don't see Trixie just growing out of these frequent infections, so I figure my best bet is to teach her how to accept it. By the end of the two weeks of post op checkups, I could just ask to see her belly, and she'd roll over. Which made it easy when they gave me the cleaning...

    Pulling staples (with pics)

She's much less antsy now. We're still doing a lot of inside walks, on Shamas account...but she's once again got free rein of the yard. We're working on harness training--I finally found one by Kurgo that she'll tolerate. Not love, but tolerate. IT's from their car restraint line, so is designed...

Co-operative care for ear drops. Could someone please break down the steps for me?

Trixie does not currently have an ear infection, but she is prone to them. And they always prescribe ear drops....and I always end up having to get the vet to put the medication right back inside her ear because Trixie doesn't "do" ear drops. She'd rather chew the shringe than let it go near...

    Pulling staples (with pics)

After nearly a full month of recovery, Trixie FINALLY got the all clear from the vet. Which is a relief, because SHE feels fine. AS the tech's telling us she can resume normal activities, she's doing her best Kangaroo impression! I hope we get some decent weather tomorrow because I have a day...

    Pulling staples (with pics)

@Jelinga I think you might be onto something....the whole time she was stapled, Trixie's incision was crusty, and didn't look to me like it was really improving. Now, a few days after pulling them out, the wound is about where I'd expect to see it at about the 10 day mark. Perhaps, her body...

    Pulling staples (with pics)

Possible @Jelinga the vet said it's taking so long because she's so active. They do understand that we're trying our best, but even with sedative in her system she resembles the Tasmanian devil lol! There's only so much you can use the crate, tie her to humans, train, and otherwise manage a...
  19. Shamas mom

    Pulling staples (with pics)

So we had our appointment, and she is infected. Not so much that I can see, but the vet says she's seeping pus. Given the risks involved, being a surgery incision, she's been placed on antibiotics..topical and oral. And continued sedation to take the edge off of her continued confinement...

Our Golden Oldies... how are they doing?

Shamas is doing better this year than last. Partly due to his weight loss (he's down to 75lbs with an ideal weight of 70) partly because of the weather. 2022, his pain levels and mobility got so bad that we got him a special harness. I do swear by helpemup harnesses. I couldn't have kept Shamas...
