Rory is nearly 8 and I'm having to have him castrated due to medical reasons. Has anyone noticed changes in an older dog they've had castrated? Mentally or physically?

I had a Jack Russell terrier castrated when he was about 9 years old , for medical reasons as one testicle had changed shape . He sailed through the op , it took about a month for the testosterone to leave his body but hand on heart, he remained the same little sod he had always been ( but we loved him dearly ) xxx

I had my Cavaliers done late in life for similar reasons to you. No problems at all. They both lived to a happy and healthy 15 years old.

Firstly, I hope Rory's OK, recovers well and any underlying problems can be 'sorted'.
We had a springer castrated at 6 and it caused no mental or behavioural changes at all. Physically, he weighed a bit less at the back end

Well, I didn't have my dog castrated late in life, but about 19 months and I can assure you there was no muscle wastage

Just adding that Toby, the JRT mentioned above , lived to be almost 20 years old and was chasing our chickens the day he took a stroke , so no , no muscle wastage x
