Coming off Suprelorin

Shadow has had two lots of Suprelorin and the second one has definitely worn off now. I remember @Beanwood saying how Benson had a big surge in testosterone when he came off of it, and Shadow is going through the same thing. He is sniffing everything at the moment, has gone completely deaf and salivates to the point of drooling even when he's smelling boy pee. And his balls are huge

I'm looking forward to it subsiding as it's really a bit tiresome. Of course, we're going back to basics with training stuff, but it's like having an adolescent around again. I also need to invest in some pet wipes.... :puke:

Oh, it's fine, just a bit boring going back to the adolescent stage. And, to be honest, he's nowhere near as bad as that, just a lot worse than he normally is. He's not really a huge sniffer for an entire male, and I like that fact. He really does need to learn some personal hygiene though! :D

Benson is going through it right now, we haven't quite peaked but the little changes in behaviour have started. Very much like going through adolescence again. What I have noticed is he becomes a little insecure and a bit uncertain while his hormones sort themselves out. This though probably varies from dog to dog. Benson I think has naturally high levels, based on comparison with other entire dogs. So although training is important right now, I am working more on fun games, spending quiet time together (he insists on coming up to bed right now :) ). Also working in low dog traffic areas, to avoid being bombarded with other dogs scent, until he is more settled.

Merlin is not on suprelorin, but he's showing some of the behaviours you are mentioning. There do seem to be a lot of bitches in heat around now (which I suppose is natural, spring and autumn), and I'm noticing a lot of behaviour from Merlin that he doesnt normally exhibit (walking further on ahead than normal, slower recall, lots of sniffing and marking, playing up to get my attention when we're at home). Lots of willy and ball licking!! (His own :cheeky:

Ahahh, this is fascinating! Kipper’s exhibiting a lot of these, and since he’s our first full dog it’s all a bit new - I’m not sure what’s just him or what’s hormone changes. I’m seeing lots of heavy drooling (not his usual style), greater independence, lack of attention, distraction during play, lots more marking and sniffing, pulling on the lead, poor recall and big balls :) I need to remind myself we’re still in the thick of these changes, I found it REALLY frustrating yesterday on our walk

I am wondering why you are using Suprelorin and not going for castration? I seem to vaguely remember that Suprelorin can have some unpleasant side effects. I do have a very keen gun dog acquaintance who uses it when she first trains the dogs so that they concentrate, then after one 'dose' she lets them return to being entire.

Hunter has his elbow check up this Wednesday and we will also be talking about Chemical castration. I like the idea it is not permanent. I asked him if he wanted a glass of chianti after his good sniffing and licking this morning. I know the first 3 weeks are hard after the implant but we live in a highly concentrated doggie neighbourhood.Lots of ladies! "Relax and enjoy our walks" are not easy at the moment.

I used Suprelorin twice - once due to unforeseen circumstances which meant that there was a chance Shadow and Luna would have to be together during her first season, and then I continued it for a second session after it appeared there were no unwanted effects, to get through her second, which might also have been a bit awkward to manage. I really don’t have a reason to surgically alter him at this point. I know it’s perfectly normal to many people and isn’t even a consideration, but I feel differently and won’t surgically alter any of my dogs without a lot of consideration. I will never say never, but I am not blasé about it, either.

Of course there are potential side effects of the drug, as there are with anything that is put into the body - even food! - but the risks are very small and no more of a concern to me than administering meloxicam. I would be far more concerned about the potential long-term side effects from irreversible surgery :)

It is how I feel also @snowbunny. Thank you for the information. It is something we are seriously thinking about especially as Hunter seems to be getting more frustrated as he just wants to play with other dogs.
I am in favour of castration but I don't think castration will stop Hunter wanting to play with other dogs! Only effect will be not to hump them but even castrated dogs can hump :)

With Benson, it is very clear that he is quite affected by testosterone in his everyday behaviours. The pre and post suprelorin really highlighted this for us. Differentiating sexualised behaviours from normal adolescent behaviour for us was also important as we didn't want to interfere with this normal development. Shutting off all testosterone production in my mind, especially after the flux due to the implant may have a more profound effect than castration, just my thoughts though.
Now Benson is back to being fully entire, there is a more competitive element. Whilst he is more interested in other dogs, he is less likely to engage in play than when the implant was over-riding his testosterone. Saying that other dogs are more interested in him.
We can manage Benson being entire, only because we can manage the environment quite well. Another factor for us is around his orthopaedic issues, being entire does help as his muscle mass is much better naturally, plus his weight is far easier to control.

I didn't know you had used suprelorin. Am I right in saying Shadow is dog / dog reactive? If so did the chemical castration affect that?
I really am just curious and hoping for some miracle, that by removing Cupars testosterone, he would magically like dogs.
I have so many questions.

Shadow is leash reactive and a dick with other entire male dogs of a certain size. He’s fine with castrated makes, females and both very large and very small dogs. We’ve also done a huge amount of work which means most people wouldn’t even consider him reactive anymore!
The suprelorin made no difference to this. Really, the only noticeable difference was how much he sniffed and how deeply.

Under control that seems to be the go to line of total A holes. The last person who used it on me got a talking too. I just wish people would give and take a bit more. Everyone had problems with there dogs when they are young I try to he forgiving and helpful, we can all be in this kind of situation.

So true, even with bitches. I'm lucky, I live in an area where most people are very forgiving and understanding of bouncy young things. Some may call it a backwater, but it does have an upside!

Hunter likes dogs he just wants to hump them though all at the moment!
I just seem to come across very grumpy owners who tell me to keep him under control. A little fed up with everything today! Not my best weekend:'(
Eurgh, sorry to hear that- I really hope you have a better week ahead :)

Stanley used to be a nightmare humper. He stopped as soon as we got him neutered and he’s only ever done it a couple of times since - usually to bitches rather than males.

(Not that I’m advocating getting him neutered - that’s a personal choice. But just if you were considering trying the implant it may help with that ☺).

Also, sorry about the div owners. People just need to be kinder - we had a puppy staff jump up at us today when we were out and we did the worst thing possible. Fussed it loads 🙈 but I think the owner was grateful that we took it well. I don’t know how you couldn’t - she was gorgeous 🥰
