I’m getting spam messages

Do you know, I thought we were being spammed. A spate of new members with similar sort of usernames ( ending in three digits) on line all the time as soon as they joined.

Occasionally a new member may slip through the spam filter software, they shouldn't be able to post anything, or message. New members are all on moderation for this reason. I don't know how a new member on moderation was able to create a private message, will need to look a bit deeper into this.

I don't know how others feel about this - maybe I'm a bit sensitive - but would it be possible to limit the members' area to people who have actually posted? I know we are anonymous, but we also do post some personal things on there too... I'm really happy that this is shared with new members who want to be a part of our happy forum, but to do that I do feel you need to interact with us, just a tiny bit?

I have tweaked the backroom permissions slightly. New users for moderation now do not have permission to start conversations. Let's see how this goes. Usually the very powerful software would pick up any spammers.

Yeah, I noticed that new members are logged in for a long time but not posting, especially this particular one. I thought of messaging a mod myself but got busy and forgot in the evening :(

They cannot actually post anything. They are just registered and not validated. They also cannot read posts in certain areas of the forum, a bit like being a "guest" on the forum. There are a few that have gotten through the spam filter, but the are they caught in a different net so to speak. Hope that reassures you! 🙂

I have had some concerns about this, especially as, however anonymous we think we are, there seem to be ways round this on the web.
