Pet Insurance

We cancelled our insurance last year as they wanted £125 a month for Harley and excluded anything to do with her arthritis and her tummy. We also would have to pay 40% of any costs. Lo and behold….9 months later her surgery cost us about £4500 to date!
Same boat Naya.....Lilly developed her lupus about a year after cancelling her insurance.
I must admit it did change the option we chose for treatment. We persevered with steroids, rather than opting for the more expensive disease modifying treatment.
I guess that wasn't so bad a choice as it went into remission spontaneously.
Now of course we are paying for the monthly Librela injection.......
C'est la vie?

I rang Tesco pet insurance. After listening to music for at least 20 minutes a very nice man came on the line. I explained my issue about the big increase in my premium. To be fair he agreed it was a lot. |( He then proceeded to explain why pet insurance goes up vet fees, age of pet etc you know the drill. He also said an increase in claims has affected premiums. I explained I understood all that but thought it still very high and my main problem was as a new customer I could get it £200 cheaper. I asked why there was such a difference between my premium and a new customer as the same conditions apply. The response was quite a lot of waffle which included the premium increases more after the first 12 months because they take in to account insuring the dog for it’s whole life or something like that. :hmm:The nice man then informed me pet insurance is the only insurance you can cancel an existing policy and take out a new one with the same provider however I then got an explanation of pre existing conditions. At the end of that though he did say if I was certain Hunter had no pre existing conditions then a new policy would make sense as he could only reduce my current premium to £409 so that’s what I did. Of course I’m gambling a bit for the next few weeks so :fingers: That was this morning I’m still waiting for him to ring me back so I can pay as there payment system wasn’t working |( . While I’ve got the chance to ask am I doing the right thing ?

An update on Hunter’s pet insurance. Tesco were supposed to ring me back on the 29/7 to confirm payment details for a new policy and cancel the original. They didn’t so I decided to wait until next week nearer the renewal date. Today I received the new policy details and a separate letter requesting the premium for my original policy . They’d obviously taken out the new policy, more importantly taken the money off my card, without confirming it with me.:hmm: They’d also got Hunter’s date of birth wrong:doh: I rang them. It got a bit complicated as they didn’t seem to understand I already had the new policy documents and therefore new policy number but by the end I confirmed I’m covered by the new policy from the 15th and the old policy will be cancelled. I think they like sending out paper work because apparently I’m going to receive cancellation documents and of course new policy documents with the altered DOB :wasntme:. The new date of birth gave me an £11 refund  unfortunately I’ve got a feeling I’ll be ringing them back when I get my altered policy documents. Thinking about what was said I’ve a feeling Hunter’s date of birth will be wrong again. :hmm:

I had a letter from Tesco this morning , Reubens insurance has gone up to 75 pounds a month from 45 . I find this excessive and so will be hunting around before 12th October when the Tesco renewal starts . It is over 2 years since his Mast Cell cancer so the rise cannot be down to that and I havent claimed for anything since , I am very angry x

I suppose the insurance has to go up due to the ridiculous vet fees these days. Not the vets fault but the companies who have taken over and hiked up the fees!

Having spent hours trawling through the minefield , I have insured Reuben with Napo , one of the few who will insure him given his mast cell cancer . It states on their website that he will be fully covered as long as a previous illness was over 24 months ago , and on checking , his surgery was well over 24 months ago . I was quite pleased with the quote plus the reviews on Trustpilot . No doubt it will go up on his next birthday but for now , I feel relief xxx
