Scent Club

Scent classes seem to be the new in thing and I am so envious, would have loved to have done that. So pleased both you and Cassie love it. My neighbour does it with her new dog, but has to travel fair distances.
Yes, I think they are, it has much to recommend it , it's not weather dependent and all dogs can do it! I think it would be ideal for an older dog with mobility issues.
Yes, I am very lucky to have this "school" close by - there were no +r trainers about here when Cassie was a puppy.

I have just finished teaching a 6 week Bronze level course, we had a partially sighted collie, and a reactive dalmation. Actually we had two dalmations and they were an absolute riot!

Edited to add link...

those indications are fantastic! Lovely video, thanks Kate. Kipper would love this when he’s fitter - it looks like UK Sniffer Dogs are worth checking out for us.

Is anyone still doing scent work?

I'm wondering if I can set up some stuff at home. I've done some simple games with Stilton - bits of liver sausage hidden in toilet rolls and placed around the garden - and he's really enjoying it, so I'm thinking both he and Kipper would love to do more.

I don't go to Scent Club at the moment (we are going to Dog Club instead -- incorporates all sorts of different activities, it's great fun).

A couple of times a week we do scent work at home but only very basic stuff, Cass loves it! She searches out "odour", cloves in her case.

I suppose it depends if you want to do "proper" stuff like fire brigades and drug detection, in which case the dogs learn to indicate exactly where the scent they are searching for is in return for reward, food or ball etc. In which case we used the cue "search" , but in the early stages of vehicle searches we used a piece of food ( to get them to be confident putting there heads into spaces) and used the cue "find it" because it was edible. Or just something that they bring back to you --- in all honesty it was apparent that most of the Labradors and spaniels wanted to do this, while most other breeds were happy just to look at it!

To start with we put things at there head height or below, and just gradually made it more difficult, sometimes dangling from the washing line and things like that !

Hope this isn't to garbled!

Thank goodness for scent games on days like these ! It's rained solidly all day, there's no point in taking Cass for a walk other than to wee and poo, she hates it . So scent games in the house this afternoon it was instead! I just love seeing her searching so persistently, she's sleeping contentedly now!

When we finish I always take her collar off and tell her "all done", when she usually goes for drink ( it's thirsty work ) before settling down, but today she kept going to a box and looking at it then me and wagging her tail! I said to her she was having me on and being cheeky to get more treats -- but after 10 minutes or so of these I looked inside and I the little tin with odour in was still there ! Naughty me -- we weren't all done and she knew it ! :hearteyesdog::hearteyesdog:
