WE finally had had it with living in the gloom of ever-shuttered windows. We have lived with our windows closed since we got Shamas, because any time someone walked past the house he went ballistic. Had to be physically pulled away from the glass. Things put in front of the window to keep him out of it, ballistic.
so I put up heavy curtains, and kept them shut. All the time. Because darkness was preferable to having Shamas go off every 3 minutes.
But now we are combating diagnosed depression, and need to brighten the house up, let in that sunlight.....regardless of Shamas' objections to people walking down the street(which sees more traffic now than it did before).
Trixie has just found her voice, and the window...so she's not habit-formed yet.
What I've done is I put in multiple layers of Sheers. So I get the light, but outside is not glaringly obvious to him. Trixie has learned that if she goes right UP to the window, she can see out...and he's started barking when she looks out. (she only voices if dogs go by..and then it's the most horrid sound....a cross between a bark and a scream as she vibrates from arousal/excitement?)
So This morning I'm introducing "Leave it" at the window...followed by "here" to reward.
so far we've gone from full-on barking madness, to just a few lower barks and a recall at first pause.
Now to show the others my plan and get them to follow through.........
