Anal Glands

Stanley keeps leaving anal gland liquid ( :puke: ) on the couch - luckily I have throws!

They don’t seem to be bothering him - he isnt itching or rubbing his bum along the floor. There’s no smell coming from him.

His poo’s are firm. Is he just disgusting or is this a vet visit issue?

Is he just disgusting
I think possibly this :)

Cassie seems to expel her own anal glands by sort of nibbling in what I can only describe as her groin, just inside her back legs next to her vulva quite intensely every now and again, and then it's all over. Like Stanley there is no bum rubbing or smell at all. But no mess to be seen, maybe she is just better at clearing up after herself!!

Squidge does hers on the floor sometimes. Luckily, we have solid floors!! She will then lick it up, because she is a total disgustington. The vet has had a feel and she doesn't have any issues, it's just what some dogs do. She's done it all her life. Conversely, I wouldn't even know that Willow, Shadow, and Ginny have anal glands!

I have never been aware of anal gland issues with either dog. I have noticed sometimes when Red is having a 💩 there is a squirt of liquid so assume that’s anal glands. Never noticed with Sky but she’s black and maybe not noticeable. Our problem is Sky’s flatulence. It is horrendous some days and you can walk into a room and phew!!! Even she gets up and leaves the room sometimes 😂

It's only every now and again. (For some reason since I did an iOS update on my iPad, I can‘t highlight and reply!)

yes it used to be with Sky but now it’s most days- embarrassing when we have visitors 🙃

I finally figured out that Quinn's butt juice (as it is known at our house) is triggered by her allergies. It's all linked to the inflammation and as soon as we get her back on meds and the itch etc under control, her anal glands are fine. I think some dogs are just prone to it though!

A few weeks ago Fergus did the front bow stretch, bum in the air first thing in the morning type thing and an arc of liquid wooshed out of his bum...yuk. I presumed anal gland juice :speaktothehand: tbh there wasn’t the usual odour, not seen that before or since. Oh they can be yucky can’t they! I might add luckily it was in the garage en route to his patio, not properly indoors.

It's worth keeping an eye on them... (not too close though!)

A few years ago when Monty's starting expressing regularly, we went to the vet and it turned out one was infected and full. Involved a GA and insertion of 2 days worth of antiobiotics up his bum, with a £150 bill.
He has one side that never quite empties properly, and I get them squeezed every 3 to 5 months at the vets. It's nearly always the same side that is full. One nurse has an excellent technique of squeezing from the side which results in les wriggling and whining from him, poor boy. At one point it got very bad and I was wondering about having them removed, but it's not without complications and a horrible recovery for them.

It doesn't help that his poos are always a bit on the soft side, probably a side effect of daily rheumocam. I don't want to jinx anything but I think he has had fewer anal expressions (?!) since he's been on more of a cooked diet. But may just be a coincidence. He has few symptons, no scooting or itching, though sometimes a bit of licking resulting in the dreaded fishy breath @Emily_Babbelhund described. Bleurgh, just gross.

Yes Stanley has fishy breath!

Honestly he’s the most disgusting creature ever. Whenever I tell my friends who have dogs what he’s like they’re like “😳 my dog doesn’t do that”.

Nathan’s going to take him to the vets to get them squeezed and checked out just incase.

OK, shouldn't have read this thread before breakfast!

Carbon just has stinky breath from 'anal self care' (har dee har) sometimes but I've learned when that happens it's time to up the veggies. It usually just happens when we're traveling a lot and I have to rely on kibble vs. home made food. Must have something to do with roughage.
Ohh, yes, just made the link in your post to veggies. I wonder if this is the key for Monty too

Alex is the only dog I've ever had with this particular talent. I can actually see when the glands are close to doing their stuff. He generally just goes out into the gardens and comes back looking much less glandular. I think it is just that different dogs have different traits. However all my dogs have lots of veggies.

Honestly he’s the most disgusting creature ever.
Challenge accepted!

While my sister was here, I took the dogs for a walk, Squidge found some human :poo:. It was about 40 minutes from home, so assumed it would have dissipated by the time she got home. But when we got in, she went straight up to my sister and gave her a big wet kiss on the face. “Luna! Your breath smells so bad!”.
“Oh. Well, ummmm... there might be a reason for that...” :wasntme:
