We have a monster!!

Last week, I was out with the dogs mooching around our land when I saw something odd. The four posts I had put out for teaching weaving were all lying on the floor. Now, at the time, it hadn’t rained in ages, so the ground was very hard; no way would they have blown over in the wind. Not only that, if they had been pushed over, they would have shown signs of damage, as the spike isn’t attached to the shaft very securely. In fact, at each place where a post had been, there was evidence of digging. Not a lot, but some. It was weird.

My first thought that it was a person passing through out land who had done it as a test to see if there was anyone paying attention, but that didn’t explain the digging. A person could have simply pulled them straight up out of the ground and wouldn’t have needed to dig. Very peculiar.

So I decided to put a camera up and got around to it the night before last. We have one of these, a wildlife camera. It’s really rugged, weather proof and shock proof.

Sadly, I didn’t have the strap to hand so I just propped it into the nook of a tree as securely as I could, and left it at that. I figured if it blew out in the wind then the next night I could secure it better with a strap.

Yesterday evening, I went out to collect it. As I approached, I saw that it had, indeed, fallen from the tree. No massive surprise there, but as I approached, I could see it had come open. No, not open. Apart. In a million pieces. Looking back at the tree, I saw some damage to it, right at the point where the camera had been. Something had been in a mood. This isn’t hugely high off the ground; the V of the tree is about level with my eyes, so around 5ft. So high enough! The top of the damage is probably around 5ft8 or so…

.. also slight damage to the base of the tree.

Whatever it was that came out into our field did not want to be filmed, and made sure it wasn’t going to happen again. Strangely, the camera uses “black LEDs” which J tells me are supposed to be invisible to animals. I wonder if it was my scent that the monster took exception to - which would be slightly intimidating!

I took the SD card in to see if anything had been captured, but sadly it didn’t survive; there is no visible damage but it doesn’t mount when it’s plugged into any of my computers or my camera. What a shame!
Next stop, another camera, placed a little higher and firmly attached with a strap!!

!!!! Absolutely fascinating. Any theories? It must be quite tall, and relatively powerful at the front end to strip bark. Do you have bears?

I think it's a wild boar. They are massive here. Powerful enough to do the damage to both the tree and the camera - I can't really emphasise how sturdy this thing it. It's not like it would be scratched even being dropped from the roof of a tall building! :D

I don't think a human would have made the scratches around the trunk; they were quite hidden in the long grass you can see at the base. I only saw them as I was hunting around for batteries - still missing one, by the way! :|

I'm about to take the dogs out for their evening walk. At least now it's cooler, I can take them out earlier. I don't fancy being out there when the light starts to fade...

Oooer! Scary! Personally I think I'd probably be more worried if I thought it was a human being rather than an animal, but that could just be me being strange:mmm:. Hope the mystery is solved soon. Stay safe and keep us posted. Do the dogs show any signs of hearing or smelling anything unusual?

That does sound quite scary. I think I too would definitely want to know what it was- knowing what's out there makes it less creepy- movie territory.

There are bears in Spain, but it's very unlikely a bear. I'm pretty certain it's a boar. Definitely not a lynx - no way a lynx could have done the damage to the camera like that.
The ground is rock hard at the moment after the summer. We had very heavy rain the other night (might even have been that night? It all blurs into one!) but the ground is so dry that it didn't make it soft enough to leave any marks. I have previously seen what I thought were deer tracks but in hindsight more likely boar tracks on our land - not to mention we had that encounter with a boar a few hundred metres away from our land in the spring, so I'm pretty convinced that's what it was. I just wonder why it went so bonkers at the camera!!

Nope! When the door is open, they occasionally run out and bark at other dogs barking nearby - and sound travels really far here, so "nearby" can be a couple of km away - so maybe they did bark and I just shrugged it off as being that, when it was actually the boar. On the other hand, they are weirdly oblivious to lots of the wildlife.
I need a different type of card for the other camera and I can't find one, so it'll have to wait until I get a new one, hopefully this weekend. I just wish I had the footage of whatever it was stomping on the camera! That would have been ace!
