Last week, I was out with the dogs mooching around our land when I saw something odd. The four posts I had put out for teaching weaving were all lying on the floor. Now, at the time, it hadn’t rained in ages, so the ground was very hard; no way would they have blown over in the wind. Not only that, if they had been pushed over, they would have shown signs of damage, as the spike isn’t attached to the shaft very securely. In fact, at each place where a post had been, there was evidence of digging. Not a lot, but some. It was weird.
My first thought that it was a person passing through out land who had done it as a test to see if there was anyone paying attention, but that didn’t explain the digging. A person could have simply pulled them straight up out of the ground and wouldn’t have needed to dig. Very peculiar.
So I decided to put a camera up and got around to it the night before last. We have one of these, a wildlife camera. It’s really rugged, weather proof and shock proof.
Sadly, I didn’t have the strap to hand so I just propped it into the nook of a tree as securely as I could, and left it at that. I figured if it blew out in the wind then the next night I could secure it better with a strap.
Yesterday evening, I went out to collect it. As I approached, I saw that it had, indeed, fallen from the tree. No massive surprise there, but as I approached, I could see it had come open. No, not open. Apart. In a million pieces. Looking back at the tree, I saw some damage to it, right at the point where the camera had been. Something had been in a mood. This isn’t hugely high off the ground; the V of the tree is about level with my eyes, so around 5ft. So high enough! The top of the damage is probably around 5ft8 or so…

.. also slight damage to the base of the tree.

Whatever it was that came out into our field did not want to be filmed, and made sure it wasn’t going to happen again. Strangely, the camera uses “black LEDs” which J tells me are supposed to be invisible to animals. I wonder if it was my scent that the monster took exception to - which would be slightly intimidating!
I took the SD card in to see if anything had been captured, but sadly it didn’t survive; there is no visible damage but it doesn’t mount when it’s plugged into any of my computers or my camera. What a shame!
Next stop, another camera, placed a little higher and firmly attached with a strap!!
