I thought I would start a thread on our favourite Kong fillings.

For any future newbies who don't know about Kong's, they can be a lifesaver for chewing teething puppies and older dogs alike.
They range from titchy softer pink and blue puppy ones, to extra-large almost-indestructible black super-tough ones. All available at your local pet shop of from trusty Amazon.

Some dogs get all their meals split up into Kongs and frozen, for others it is more of a treat.
With puppies, to start with, just use some of their normal kibble in a small or medium Kong, leave it soaking for an hour or so......and serve!
As a dog gets older an more proficient at slurping the content out, start with some freezing - maybe just a few hours to start with, then build up to a rock-solid overnight freeze.

So what are all the favourites, aside from simple kibble?

Lillys's include
  • Mashed banana and yoghurt
  • Layered kibble and cheese cubes
  • Leftover mashed veg and meat
  • Just about anything else you care to name!
Over to you guys..........

Pepper’s favourites currently are:

Mashed banana and kibble;
Mashed carrot and kibble;
Chicken and kibble.

All of the above may also have a spoonful of yoghurt some days.

And most importantly all sealed with a blob of peanut butter or squeezy cheese!

This week is wild blueberries mixed with banana, wet food (salmon) and cheese. Other favourites are:
- mashed sweet potato and chicken (or tuna)
- tripe wet dog food and kibble
- apple and carrot in food processor, mixed with plain yogurt

I like to stick a treat in the top :)

I have used; mashed banana sealed with peanut butter, cooked and mashed carrots and sweet potato, mince with carrots to seal and mashed blackberries with apple, all frozen except when she was a tiny pup and she couldn't manage them frozen.

I seal the small hole with peanut butter, then fill with mashed sardines (and a bit of the oil) or tuna, then mashed banana - a sort of Kong equivalent of a Cornish pasty! 4 Kongs need one tin of sardines/tuna and two bananas. If the supermarket spies check my shopping habits they must think I live on sardines and tuna!

Kipper’s trying his first adventurous long at the moment - banana at the bottom, then grated apple and yoghurt topped with more banana and frozen. Normally it’s peanut butter plug - frozen. Then kibble and water with a small dollop of peanut butter near to the top to keep enthusiasm going when he gets past the easy top bit :)

My go to fillings are:
Kibble soaked then mixed with tinned tuna or sardines (until the last of the kibble runs out);
Their regular home-made food of meat and veg stew;
Raw mince or chicken.

KFC potato and gravy, frozen. Which he doesn’t get that often. But it’s a favourite.

We recently bought a can of the Kong spray in stuff (not actually a spray but aerosol propelled tasty goop) and Obi really likes this a lot. We layer it with kibble.

I got it from a friend who is a Kong reseller - she had a few cans she was offloading at a discount. Wouldn’t have thought to buy it otherwise. But Obi enjoys it and there is actually quite a lot in the can, so it has lasted well. I’d say it’s quite good value. I would definitely look to get more of it when we empty this can. We have the bacon and cheese flavour.

What size Kongs do you have? I'm thinking large. Thanks x
I have mostly large, i have a couple of medium but they do feel a touch on the small side though I'm probably being silly, as sure they wouldn't be a choking hazard, but Itend to only use the large now

I buy (good quality if possible) wet dog food in trays, to use too and bottom of the Kong, with a mix of soaked kibble in the middle.
