The Labraventures of Carbón, Spanish (ex-) foster dog extraordinaire

Carbon and I made it to our newest lodging on this dreary rainy Bavarian day. From 7am to 10:30am this morning, I did what is now my regular Sunday routine of packing up all our belongings (the easy bit) and then eradicating dog hair from every square centimeter of holiday rental accommodation. While I cover every soft surface with my own sheets and duvet covers and stash away any decorative soft item (pillows, runners, etc.) upon arrival, it still takes me several hours and umpteen lint roller sheets to get everything sorted.

What a pain. But I consistently get the comment from rental owners that, "You couldn't even tell a dog was there - you are so lucky that you have a breed who doesn't shed!" Good. Let them think that and hopefully welcome me back the next time I need a place to rent.

I'm really grateful that the owners of the place I moved to today let me come in right at 11am. My other Sunday routine has been walking Carbon and hitting up McDonald's while killing time between the normal check out time (10-11am) and the normal check in time (after 3pm). Way to waste a Sunday!

Today however we got in right at 11am and while I'm not unpacked yet, my laptop is set up and the enormous sectional white sofa is wrapped in my own double thick duvet covers and festooned with Carbon's personal pillow. Why oh why do so many holiday rentals - dog friendly holiday rentals no less - do WHITE sofas? My personal feeling is that NO ONE should do white sofas. There should simply be legislation on every country on the planet that says WHITE SOFAS ARE BANNED.

Having said that, the white sofa in this place is an incredibly tacky monstrosity with drink holders and electrical plugs build into the armrests. In other words, a fabulously comfy place to hang out on a rainy Sunday afternoon.

The flat itself is enormous and is part of an even more enormous single family house. It's a bit cludgey any time I have an apartment inside someone's house, as you never quite feel autonomous, but this place has a separate entrance and unlike the place we were in two weeks ago, didn't come with a list as long as my arm of house rules. After a week of having to wear someone else slippers (really? couldn't I simply have worm my own slippers?), I really appreciate said lack of house rules. (y)

The little village is also only a 15 minute drive to my parking garage space in old town Regensburg. Which ironically means that I can actually get into old town Regensburg quicker now than when I was in Regensburg... the place we just came from was a 20 minute walk to the centre and to my car.

Second plus of the village is it's where Carbon's vet is. So since last night he vomited up his dinner for the third night in a row, we'll be paying her an impromptu visit tomorrow to see if she can help.

Lastly, we'll actually be here for 11 days, which means that next Sunday...NO MOVE! YEE HAW!!! :monkey:

Hope Carbon will be alright, what did the vet say?
They open tomorrow morning so we'll head down there then. One of the side effects of doxycyline is nausea and tummy upset, so I'm not worried that it's something new that's happening. I imagine we just need better/more stomach protectors. Now he takes his protector in the morning and keeps his breakfast down just fine. It may be that we need to cut out his second meal, but I honestly think Carbon would expire of disappointment in that case. Hopefully there's a more 'hungry Labrador friendly' solution!

Have you tried him with a piece of butter toast? I always try this with Fred when he has a poorly tummy.
Is butter toast just bread with butter on it? Sorry if that's a silly question.

He threw up the bread bits I shared from my dinner night before last, so bread seems to make it worse. Or it could just be anything he eats at night, hard to tell.

Toast is bread which has been under the grill until brown (this drys the bread out), then cover with butter. I cut it into 4 piece and then give them one at a time.

Hope dear Carbon stops being sick, does he manage to digest some of the food or is he losing weight? Does he appear happy enough in himself or would you say he feels nauseous poor lad.

He's in fine form mood-wise and doesn't seem nauseated at all until he gets out of bed to vomit. Then he hops back into bed with tail thumping. Seems to happen 3-6 hours after his evening meal.

Tonight I've just fed him a VERY light evening meal, which he's not going to be thrilled about but hopefully will help.

He may have lost a bit of weight but I think that's more that I'd been reducing his protein and increasing veggies as he'd started to get a winter buddha belly. And also as he can no longer free run, I knew I'd have to reduce his calories anyway, poor little señor. He definitely could still lose another kilo or so without any worry about weight.

The worry I have is more about nutrition and also is all his evening medication going into his system or simply being vomited up every night?

You really have been through the wringer Emily
The last few weeks have indeed been a bit wringer-esque.

However - and knock on wood when I say this - I'm feeling more optimistic about this coming week. We're in a nicer apartment, my residence permit is finally complete, I've been cleared to travel. If we can get Carbón's tummy sorted, my new computer delivered and some successful accommodation planning for March...things are looking up! :giggle:

Isn't life strange, one moment down in the depths and then the next everything begins to look rosy. So pleased that the future is looking rosy now and at least Carbon doesn't feel poorly. I can remember someone on this forum saying medication will be absorbed in so many minutes/hours but I cannot remember who!!! Might have been @Beanwood?

Heh, heh... I think that was when Carbon vomited after his Drontal treatment in Italy. Carbon - and this forum - is teaching me so much! Yes, if I remember the consensus for absorption was 2- 3 hours. I just want to check with the vet to be on the safe side.

I have to say, this new apartment is really doing wonders for both our dispositions. I've just had a fabulous shower, I love all the extra space and it's so nice to be somewhere that feels like a place an adult would live vs. a 19 year old university student. I'm more relaxed and Carbon is flitting around tossing his fur babies in the air and generally acting like a seriously happy pup.

Big sigh of relief all round. :dancesheep:
