Back to basics

The one thing that Reuben always excelled in was his recall , no matter where we were or who was around, he would respond quickly but its all gone to pot . Its always when other dogs are around, he just wants to go and play but I`m very mindful that not all dogs want to play . I think it is most likely to do with the fact that I cant walk far at the moment so he is not getting the exercise he is used to . We had got over the crying in the night to be let out for a poo , but then at 2 a.m. this morning I heard him crying quietly outside the bedroom door , I opened it and he flew in and onto the bed wanting a cuddle , didnt have the heart to send him back to the sitting room . I guess all his routine has gone to pot , no morning walk for a while as we have the ongoing saga of the solar panels, men in and out constantly and then in the afternoon its only 30 minutes or whatever I can manage . I`m going to spend more time working on the recall , he is brilliant until he spots another dog so its reinforcement time with many treats and his beloved ball x

I have the same with Red - although I am completely unable to walk her at the moment because of my back. F doesn’t have any issues. It started really when we went into lockdown last March. Also there has been no daycare or kennel stays where she’s be getting her fill of socialising. Other people I know have reported the same - that their dogs are desperate to play with other dogs. Most people are very nice and we allow a quick play then go on our way. I find the ball a great ‘tool’ or a treat literally held over her nose if I sense we need to just move on....but I have to ‘read’ the situation before she sees the dog

Rourke has never been encouraged to play with another dog and so doesn't see them as a play thing. He enjoys walking with his friend Connor and meeting Malcolm's five dogs, non of them play but spend the time sniffing all the exciting scents in the field and Connor and Rourke tend to stick together, often Connor sends Rourke in to hunt for a Muntjac while he waits hopefully on the edge in case one runs out!

Every time @kateincornwall, we see a person or another dog, Rourke will come running to me for the ball, it is a powerful reward, perhaps work on that? See a person, or a dog, rush back and get the ball.

@Jelinga Its funny because Sam was never one for playing with other dogs , he largely ignored them , Reuben, on the other hand is much more sociable , but this afternoon on my stagger around , we came upon a young spaniel , they did a nice meet and greet , then I called Reubs away and blow me down, he came immediately . Good days and not so good days , but he is not bad for a young enthusiastic lad x
