Better the devil you know ?

Sorry , this may be a little long and complicated x I have always used Tesco for pet insurance , they have at times been a little slow to pay up but have never refused a claim .
Last week , I got my renewal letter through, the premium had doubled , and so I rang and cancelled , then began to cast around for a better deal . I think I mentioned before that we had decided not to continue insurance for Nelly as her health issues are many and complex , nothing that can be cured, just managed as best we can .
I found a decent policy with Petplan , so rang them to buy , then came the usual gauntlet of questions which I answered honestly as I know that anything not declared could make a policy null and void . I told them about the garlic eating episode and subsequent blood tests which followed the treatment , silence on the other end , then the lady asked for our Vets phone number , told me to stay on line while she rang them to get confirmation that there have been no lasting effects from garlicgate . She said that the adjudicators would look at the policy , and that I would get a copy of the policy by e mail .
Policy came through , and to my amazement there were two exclusions , one being that they would not cover any gastrointestinal issues , the second that they would not cover any blood disorders , I was gobsmacked , Reuben was discharged by our Vet as being fit and healthy following his last clear blood test , and this was over seven months ago . I rang Petplan , challenging this decision , they said that they might review the exclusions in 3-6 months time , so keeping as polite as possible , I told them to cancel it , and informed them that I would cancel my DD which had been set up to commence in a few days time when the original Tesco one ran out . " I am sorry that you are upset about this " said the man on the phone , upset ?? Furious more like ! But the lady was not for turning , so back to the drawing board and I decided to ring Tesco again . Got a lovely man on the phone , he explained that my policy had not yet been cancelled as it was still valid until 12th October , and would I like him to see what he could do for me ? He said that because of the claim for garlicgate , the premium had gone up but if he were to quote me as a new customer , garlicgate would definately not be counted as a pre existing condition , because it was not an illness , more an accident, woa , someone talking sense at last ! He then gave me a very good quote and once more stressed that there were no exclusions , that they were happy that the incident was an accident and need not be disclosed as an illness . Happy bunny now , maybe better the devil you know after all xxx

I swap every year. I do this by phone and then phone the old insurer to see if they can match it. They always say ‘only for new customers’. I’m lucky, Tatze has no pre-existing conditions, so it’s easy to switch. She’s six years old now and we have lifetime cover with LV this year for £38 a month. That’s what I was paying with John Lewis and they upped it to £52. :headbang:

If she gets a condition I’ll have to stick with whoever I’m with at the time.

When my dogs get so old I wouldn’t put them through an op I stop insuring them. The cost of insurance is the main reason we only have one dog.

It makes me so grateful for the NHS. The US has this system for human health care.:mad:

Stanley’s insurance keeps going up. It’s increased from £25 to £40 a month but I know insurance companies are bastards and anything on his records will be deemed a pre-existing condition.

Most of it would be fine, but I once took him because he had a limp. It turned out it was just a pulled muscle but I know that if anything were to happen with his hips or elbows they would now say that joints were excluded if I changed and that’s going to be the most expensive issues more than likely.

They would definitely argue that eating things is a pre-existing issue as well because his records are full of it 😬

We do this every year with Tesco. One year OH is the new customer and the next year I am. It is funny when just renewing it always goes up, but new customer with the same dogs goes down. In fact it was a nice lady at Tesco told us to do this, We have never claimed.

Tatze has eaten many things but the vet doesn’t know - apart from an few phone calls in the early days, which are not on her record. Luckily she throws up everything illegal that she eats (eventually after several worrying days |()

It's truly a nightmare. Hattie & Charlie have no pre-existing conditions and still it has shot up to over £1,000 per year. Still contemplating cancelling as it's too expensive. Just need to be brave and cancel it. xx

This is why I pay my healthcare premiums but never claim anymore. I claimed once for my cancer treatment and the policy doubled for three years straight. Now it 'only' goes up by 15% or so a year. I could switch to German insurance but it apparently would be double what I pay for my US-based worldwide policy. Of course it would actually cover me vs just be in name only (which I have to do for my German immigration status). The older I get, the more attractive having 'real' health insurance seems. I still lucky though as I couldn't get cover at all in the US. It's one reason - a big one - that I don't move back.

Carbon of course is a lost cause. Even if we didn't travel all the time, no one would cover him with Leish and the heart worm. :(

@kateincornwall I'm really pleased with the outcome you had from Tesco. That was a surprise happy ending!
