Beware chews!

The only treat I will leave my dogs with if I go out is a frozen Kong, and I had a reminder of why this weekend. After a lovely long walk, I gave them each a beef scalp chew and then J and I went and sat on the bed to watch some TV. After a little while, Shadow came up and sat on a dog bed on the floor next to us. A few minutes later, he jumped up, and it looked as if he was holding something in his mouth. I asked him to give it to me, but he didn't, and then I saw a spot of blood about to drip from his chin. I opened his mouth, and found that a portion of the chew had wedged itself between his teeth on the roof of his mouth. I was quickly able to dislodge it, and he was immediately happy again. But it was a bit of a wakeup call that these treats are potentially dangerous, so should only be given supervised.

Eek, glad all was okay but a very good reminder. I'm highly sus of chews since tiny puppy Kipper used to hide under a chair to wolf down the last bits and sometimes get them stuck. Never alone is an important message.

I can’t give mine large (long-lasting?!) chews because Tuppence swallows everything whole. The only time I’ve seen her chew anything recently was when I put her Drontal tablet in her breakfast, so she picked up each individual bit of kibble and chewed it, but of course left the two bits of Drontal tablet!
