Cartrophen Injections

Has anyone's dog/s had these? Rourke's arthritis in his shoulders has not responded to laser treatment; Metacam and Previcox make him sick, so now vet is trying Cartrophen injections. If you have, did you find them effective?

A few months ago we started Obi on Cartrophen (Pentosan polysulfate aka Pentosan, aka Zydax....) because he seemed to have a bit of soreness in his hips. He was reluctant to get into the car and occasionally did a skip, missing putting his right hind leg down while moving. Since the course of four injections he has no longer done the skipping thing and would fling himself up onto the back seat (of a very high car) if we let him. So, yes, we noticed a definite difference. Same with our previous Labrador, Nicolae.

I think also @David has had some good results with the LBD :)
Yes the SBD had good results with it for about 2 years, but the 3rd round of annual jabs didn't work because her arthritis, I think, had progressed beyond the point where Cartrophen was effective anymore. She's now on Metacam and doing fine. Hopefully that will give her another couple of years by which time she'll be 11. If that all works to plan it will be a good result in my view for a dog diagnosed with ED at age 2+.

@Jelinga, when discussing Cartrophen with my rehab vet, she quoted success rates around 70% if that helps? Both Casper and Benson are on Yumove Advance and salmon oil :)

@Beanwood, I would prefer the success rates to be higher, but then I am a pessimist. Rourke was on Yumove but have changed it to Joint Aid and intend to get some salmon oil when the Yumega Oil finished. I am wondering whether to change him onto a salmon kibble but not sure if it is a good idea to change him from being 7 years on Lamb and Rice.

It’s not too expensive...would be worth trying a course and seeing if it helps. If you’re ok giving injections (assume you are, as an ex vet nurse :) ) get the vet to draw up the doses for you and you can do it at home. The doses aren’t big and are just given into a handful of skin at the back of the neck.

@David, that is good to read that you managed two good years on Cartropen. Did you give her any supplements or changed her diet? Sadly Rourke cannot take Metacam or drugs of that ilk.
No she's not on anything special. Re Metacam, I have actually cut back Lady's dose to 2/3 as that seems to do the trick and she seems to tolerate the lower dose better. I thought about also using cannabis oil as a supplement but unfortunately that interferes with the metabolism of the Metacam and the trial I did with it without Metacam wasn't appearing to do the job but I may not have persisted long enough. I know a couple of dog owners (spaniels) that use it to ease arthritis and say it works well.

Rourke has had one injection so far and as it is on insurance I don't have to worry about cost. However, good idea @Oberon to inject him myself if not insured. I did inject pain killers on one of my dogs years ago.

@David, do you mean 2/3 tabs a day or you give her one tablet for 2/3 days and then give a rest? I met a retired vet down the lane and she mentioned cannabis oil which had helped her dog when it had pain from cancer, I mentioned the possibility to my vet and he poo poo-ed the idea. But it is a thought I will seriously consider.
