First attempt at a hump !

I thought we were getting away with it far too easily as the lad has never humped anything even as a puppy . However , this morning he met the love of his life , black Lab Tara who he adores, and showed his affections in more ways than one :monkey:Now , although dear Tara didnt object , I wonder why he did it as she is spayed , I suppose just the excitement of the meeting just got too much for him xx

I think it’s exactly as you say Kate, excitement at seeing his friend! I’ve always found it easier to understand in terms of arousal, in that it’s not necessarily anything sexual - more about excitement and needing to have an outlet. Kipper humps his bed when he’s over-tired and feeling a bit frazzled, rarely humps other dogs. My mum’s dog Jambo is neutered and humps other dogs when he’s really excited like after a run around, but it passes in seconds.

It could be general excitement, or it could be that Tara smells particularly lovely to him...

I've always taught my intact male dogs that it is bad manners to try to hump other dogs; they learn in time that it is not acceptable. It's one of the few times that I actually tell them off, and then reward them with something nice (a treat, or a ball to carry) when they stop or do something else. I've never worked out a positive-only way to teach 'don't hump your friend'. Interestingly, Merlin will only try it on with very sweet-natured, compliant bitches or good-natured neutered males. Any dog who tells him off, he leaves well alone in future!

Yes, probably just over-excitement. Shadow will try to hump the girls on occasion at walk time; it's the only time he does it. I just push him off and that's that. I'm more than happy in this situation to remove him from the situation. Occasionally I'll do a scatter as a redirect. Depends how full my hands are with trying to get them and me dressed up for the walk!
