First Training Session

I've just got back from a first assessment session with Poppy. I'd already briefed the trainer about Poppy's history so she was aware we were putting a whole heap of new behaviours into Poppy. All very good and the conclusion was I have a really good dog. No pressure then! We are assuming Poppy is starting from complete scratch so she'll be in a class with a couple of 6 month old Labs to start with plus some one-to-ones.

We did discover a couple of things though. She is well used to place mats and she is well used to going through tunnels! Also a clenched fist with arm across the chest and she sits promptly.

Things to work on -

Not lunging in for the dummy until invited - all on the lead at the moment.
Holding the dummy while walking then handing over.
Walking at heal in absolutely all locations - this is the hardest because basically she is used to being a free agent.

Onwards and upwards!

I am so pleases you are doing gundog training with Poppy, you will have a lot of fun and also she can come shooting with you. The only thing about the sitting, is that you will need to teach her to sit to a raised hand so that she can see the signal to sit at a distance :)

Yes we've got that in hand. It was just trying out different stuff to see what she reacted to and that was one of them.

So good to read this David , lots of positives there too . Lots of luck and I`m sure it will be the making of Poppy , she sounds such a lovely soul x ( hope you are feeling better too )
On the mend - thanks. Hacking cough but that will go on for weeks.
