Fish oil

Tatze has salmon oil - if I leave it off for a few weeks her coat is much less glossy.

I don’t worry about such scare articles, I think they are likely selling their own products. I’ve taken cod liver oil capsules myself as long as I can remember (when my Mum used to give them to us I’d burst them in my mouth - ewwww!)

I agree with @Boogie , it sounds like scaremongering, a bit like all the contradictory articles on what is and isn’t good for us humans.
All we can do is read the evidence for and against, and make our own informed decisions. This article is not really giving an unbiased opinion when it is directing us to buy another product instead.

When Hunter started limping at 4 months we started looking seriously at supplements etc. I also came across the Phytoplankton discussions. It all got very too much info for me( I was already a mess about his ED and elbow operation so info just did not stay).
I currently use high quality Salmon oil for Hunter. His has a very shiney coat (shame about his joints though!) and his coat does look dull if he does not have the salmon oil for a week or so. As @SteffiS says we make our own informed decisions.
On another note I am personally taking krill oil capsules and my hips do seem to be working better! I also share the golden paste I make with Hunter! One spoonful for Hunter and one for the mama!

Yes I agree. I have only ever thought it could be good for Sky. Just made me stop and question for a moment though

That’s exactly what I thought

Yes me too.

I’ve found Dogsnaturally to have become very focused on sales to the detriment of maintaining a balanced view, ie biased to make sales. I can’t blame them for the commercial focus, but you need to be aware of that when reading their articles.

I am not keen on supplements because they’re not strictly governed and you’re never sure what you’re actually buying. For fish oil, I prefer feeding Snowie a pilchard every day or so. It’s less processed than a capsule filled with oil. And I do wonder what the extra processing to extract the oil and get it into the capsule does to the oil.

Definitely some interesting points worth thinking about. I've found if I leave off the fish oil/omega 3 capsules for a week I don't see a difference. If I do the same with his one tablespoon of salmon oil a day, he gets itchy. I would certainly consider alternatives to the capsules and maybe he doesn't even need them at all. I'd be hard pressed to give up the salmon oil, though, because I know I'd have a very itchy boy on my hands.

You're also in the position with Carbón where you shouldn't be feeding oily fish because of the high purines. Salmon oil is highly refined and removes those purines that could interfere with his meds/kidney function.

Thank you for confirming that for me - that was indeed the strategy as I can't feed him a lot of sardines as I did with Brogan.

I did see the above article some time ago and decided to take Rourke off salmon oil and back to Yumega. Rourke's coat was much shinier on Yumega. I must admit to being wary of farmed salmon. I then read another article which said Salmon oil was better for joints, so decided to stay on it!
