Librela

Hi,
I have just joined after reading posts on advice and answers regarding Librela injections.
My black lab had her first injection last week and stopped taking her 1/2 Previcox but is still taking 1/2 of a paracetamol twice daily as recommended by her vet.
She is due her cartrophen injection and can't take Previcox 7 days before or after that is why the vet recommended stopping the Previcox.
She has hip dysplasia and arthritis in her elbows.
I have notice she has started drinking a lot more water in the last 2 to 3 days and wondered if anyone has experience this after the Librela injection.
I did think it could be she is in pain and I will be contacting the vets am.
Any thoughts would be appreciated as it is very worrying.

Sorry to read your Lab has joint problems, my Lab is riddled with arthritis and has a profound fore leg lameness. He has had two Librela injections so far, due third one on Thursday. I have not noticed any increase in his drinking, he barely drinks anything! After the first Librela he seemed happier for almost a week, after the second he seemed happier for nearly three weeks. He is unable to take Metacam or any tablet of that ilk.

It has certainly been warmer over the last week, depending of course on where you live.

I hadn't noticed my old boy drinking more, however he is a predominately wet diet. If your girl is on a kibble diet, or has a lot of dehydrated chews, maybe consider a change to a more overall moist diet. You can always add warm water to her kibble to add moisture and reduce her thirst that way.

*Any sudden change in behaviour however, should always be discussed with your vet, especially if the behaviour is coupled with new medication or a change in how medication is administered, in this case stopping Previcox may will have increased pain.

Hi @Jazz , welcome to the Forum. Great idea to contact the vets - as @Beanwood says, any change in behaviour (particularly basic functions like drinking) are worth checking out with a professional and your pain theory sounds plausible. I hope you've had helpful advice from them now.

Our young (4.5 yrs) boy is on his 2nd dose of Librela and whilst we'd heard anecdotally that increased drinking and urinating may be a feature, we haven't noticed this ourselves. It's not currently reflected in either professional experience (according to our well-networked vet specialist) or the scientific literature. This doesn't mean it's not a feature of course, just that it hasn't worked it way into the formal reports yet.

We'd be glad to hear more about you and your lab over on the Welcome thread, if you'd like to share - but no pressure! We have plenty of members who dip in and out, no expectations.

Hi,
Thank you for all your reply's.
I have seen the vet today and I took a wee sample to help diagnosis what the problem is.
The vets said all looks normal and is unable to diagnosis why Jazz is drinking a lot more water.
The vet read the side effects on Librela and said the only one was Heat around the injection area.
Which did not happen to Jazz.
I now have to monitor how much Jazz is drinking.
I'll keep you updated on her progress.
Kind regards Yvette

Hunter has a wet food "diet" and I have noticed that he does get increased drinking just after the injection. However on other occasions we notice nothing after injections. So it is really hard to pinpoint if it is Librela or not. We personally think yes, but it is a side effect that I can live with as it greatly improves his mobility. Hunter is also a young Lab of 4 1/2 and of the chocolate "idiot" variety.
You did the right thing talking to the vet.
Sorry that poor Jazz has joint issues and I look forward to your progress updates.

My 10 year old lab has had librela 5 months now. He was like a new dog from day 3. He suddenly seemed happier and younger. We have tried 1 injection with our second lab as he seemed to have the same limp but has not made any difference as yet. He is due is second tomorrow.

Hi and welcome to the forum @Normy :hi:

The response to Librela varies from dog to dog. It does seem that the positive response for your 10 year old labrador was very quick. It is not unusual for the injection to take up to the second dose to see any real effects. It may also mean that the limp may need further investigation, but I am sure your vet has been very thorough!

Fingers crossed you see some good results soon!
