What is Rally?

Rally or Rally O as it is more commonly called in the US, is a great way to bond with your dog. Originating from Obedience heelwork, Rally is basically working along a pre-set course with your dog. Elements comprise, heelwork, sit, halt, sit and halt, turns (left and right.)

You can participate either at a local club or through one of the many online groups which are great if you are struggling to get to a club or have a reactive dog.

So, how does it work? Along each course, there are signs indicating the element required at this point. Each competitor starts with 200 points, and these are deducted along the course when faults occur. The course is set by the judge or trainer. There is no pause between exercises - you and your dog work briskly through the course without direction from the judge. You are encouraged to talk to and praise your dog during the performance. Any dog can get involved; your dog does not have to be a pedigree dog to take part, but if you want to compete it must be registered with the Kennel Club on either the Breed Register or the Activity Register.

Rally is a competitive sport recognised by the UK KC club, and there is lots of information on their website.
