After the bank holiday episode of Ripple being unwell (and making a remarkable recovery at the vet). He has woken up this morning with a swollen face and what looks like the start of a hotspot, so I’m back to the emergency vet or not dilemma. It doesn’t seem to be bothering him much but I know how quickly these things can develop.

Poor Ripple, I dread the falling ill out of hours and emergency vet debate. It may have already been suggested but do you get a vet video helpline with your insurance? I don’t personally but I know a lot of people do and find it really useful in these situations. Hope Ripple is on the mend very soon.
My insurance has phone cover but it’s only a vet nurse, I spoke to them at the last bank holiday and they just advised emergency vet, which, as it turned out, wasn’t needed.
Poor Ripple. Hope he's ok. The emergency vet is always s dilemma but they are open all night if he gets worse you can always go.

How is Ripple this evening?
He’s fine in himself, but his face is still very swollen. I’m sure the wet patch is a hot spot, OH has been bathing it regularly today with salted water and it doesn’t seem to have got any worse.
We’ve also had to keep the boys separate all day as Toffee was constantly trying to wash Ripple’s face. Hopefully a vet visit tomorrow will sort things out.

.Rang the vets as soon as they opened, only one vet consulting today - no appointment until 1pm. Asked if it was a senior vet, no, a junior one. On a Monday, when they must know they will be busy

Quite an interesting vet visit, I was busy making blackcurrant jam so OH took Ripple. The diagnosis was an insect bite of some sort and what we've done so far is exactly right. She didn't mention hotspot and just recommended carrying on with the salt water, she did offer a course of steroids but said it was optional and said we could use piriton instead, so OH decided against the steroids.
We've just got to keep an eye that it doesn't get any worse and take him back if it does. I was quite impressed actually as my experience of junior vets at that practice is all the medicines they can think of and a raft of unnecessary 'just in case' tests - so I'm quite pleased to say I stand corrected
