Scent games at home

I had a quick scan through the Sally Guttridge book and decided to launch straight into one of the later games at home. The only scentwork Molly has done is the formal obedience thing of having to find a cloth with my scent on it when placed in a row of other cloths.
Today I put some ground cinnamon in a clean sock and tied a knot. (It didn't smell very strong to me - when I looked at the packet it was about a year out of date!) To start with I just put in on the floor and told Molly to fetch it, then hid it behind a chair while she was watching and again she found it and brought it to me. Next I shut her out of the room while I hid it in different places and each time she found it really quickly (mind you, a very small room.)
I know that in real scentwork they are supposed to indicate rather then retrieve the item but we are doing this purely for entertainment. I was pleasantly surprised with how engaged Molly was with the game, and will try it outside soon. I think she's become bored with heelwork and rally-type stuff because I've overdone it, so I'm finding some interesting new things to play for a while.

Sounds good Joy , I have only just stated real games with Reuben because I reckon its a waste of time if they are being silly ! I will try this , I also have pots of spices that are well out of date , lurking in the dark abyss of my cupboards ! x

Well done Molly. When I’ve done scent classes they have always used catnip. Harley loves doing any type of scent work, especially if it ends with a nice treat 😀
