Sleeping on own bed

So... Chewie has been sleeping in his crate in our room until recently. We want to decrate him before the baby comes (due mid July) and have bought him a beautiful bed that he does like, but he likes our bed more! And he is so fidgety and snorey, between him, my reflux and giant pregnancy pillows it just isn't working.

The bed will be in our room, and we would like him to stay there until 6am or so... ideally until we get up, but if he wants morning cuddles that's fine too. What do we do? We tried last night and he just jumped onto our bed every 30mins and had to be popped back in his crate. I am planning to take him up there this evening and give him some treats for lying on his bed, but beyond that? We have been giving treats and praise when he lies on it, and have sat on the floor next to his bed while he relaxes on it.

Eventually he may be ready for staying on his own bed without the crate, but for now it sounds like the leap between the crate and the bed is upping the criteria too fast. How about putting is new bed in the crate and leaving the crate door open until you are ready for bed, then into the crate he goes with a Kong/treats. Then when you are ready for him to be out and morning cuddles, open the crate door and let him come up with you if he wants. During the day, you could prop the crate door open so that he has free access to his new bed.

That's pretty much what has been happening, although the new bed is a bit too big for the crate so it is just sitting next to our bed and we let him rest on it when we are up there, with much fanfare! (Aren't you good being on your bed!) The crate is still there too and he wanders between the two, but always tries to end up on our bed. We were both quite restless last night, which didn't help.

I suspect we are just going to have to deal with a few sleepless nights while we get him used to it.

We are going through just the same with Reuben , he would look at his bed and then jump onto ours ! But , slowly he is spending more time on his than ours, still having the odd visit but he doesnt stay all night thank goodness ! What I did was to put a few pieces of kibble on his bed , and told him to stay, sometimes it works ! Good luck x

Ella's bed is in our room and her crate is in the lounge room. If we didn't have Nathan, we wouldn't still have the crate but it's been really useful to give Ella a safe space.

At night, Ella starts in our bed, with me. Then, when OH comes to bed, she goes on her bed. Some nights she ends up on the couch in the lounge room and other nights, especially when it's colder, she ends up snuggled in between us in bed. No, it's not particularly comfortable. To be honest, the only thing I think we could do now would be to out a baby gate across our door and stop her coming in.

With Pepper, who was never crate trained, he sleeps on the floor if he’s warm or his bed if it’s colder.

He normally starts on our bed but they jumps off after 5-10 minutes and spreads out on the floor or his bed. He’ll then jump back up once he’s awake in the morning. We didn’t really have to train this, just remind him where his bed is if he doesn’t take himself there after 5-10 minutes of us turning the lights out.

So... for some reason Chewie slept like a log last night in his open crate. He did lie on his bed for a bit and jumped up in our bed at 6, which OH thinks is too early. But the sun was rising and the birds were singing, so I'm not sure how you explain to a dog that he needs to wait for dad to be less grumpy. Lol.

Anyway, very pleased with that!
