Sore spot on pad

This is a tiny thing that hopefully stays tiny, but I noticed Kipper gnawing at his foot a lot and he’s got quite a sore spot there:

I’ve put hibiscrub on which was clearly a little uncomfortable but I’m not sure what else to do now - it seems a bit minor for a full bandage (and frankly, I’d be using a hooman first aid kit which isn’t ideal), and I don’t have a car to get to the vets today. My concern is if I don’t cover it he’ll keep licking it? I won’t walk him again today to try and keep it relatively clean...

Week, looks sore. Shadow had a big one of these when J was looking after him over the summer (when Ginny was "in season") - it was about half of his large pad!
I was told to just keep it clean, wash it with cooled boiled salt water and let the air get to it. It actually healed remarkably quickly.

Eep, half a pad?! Poor Shadow - you might have posted photos actually, I remember seeing something pretty painful-looking.
The boiled salt water tip is really good, thanks - and letting the air circulate is also wise. Thank you! (I feel a fool as I really should know all of this from the dog first aid course *yawn* but it’s not quite the same as experienced reassurance )

Plum has had this a couple of times.

I used sudocrem and put on a sock when she was asleep. Sudocrem healed it very quickly.
I didn’t try the salt water/let air get to it which may have worked just as well.

Poor Kipper. I am a great believer in boiled cooled salt water, you could put some Manuka honey on it and cover with an old sock. xx

That looks sore.
My SILs dog kept abrading her carpal pads and she swore that aloe vera lip salve was the best thing to help healing.

this is all fascinating, thanks everyone - I like the sock idea for when he's asleep, or at least unsupervised - I think it might give just enough distraction from automatically chewing it. Hopefully it'll be healed in a few days

Yup...boiled salt water and sudacreme here! Just keep a watch out for the usual suspects, redness, heat or the spot getting worse. Wrapping a bit of gauze, sudacreme, vet wrap and an old sock might help for overnight.

When a I saw your photo @HAH, I thought sudocrem. I have used it many times on Sky for different sore patches - it’s good stuff.

It's not the same as sudacreme but still contains a mild antiseptic and also soothing ingredients so should be fine

Manuka honey is always recommended by my vet and has always worked really well. Harley has cut and sliced off chunks of her paw pads before. Definitely put on a sock if you can’t supervise just to stop it getting worse. Hope it heals soon x
