I remember when working for the vet, two Golden Retrievers came in for consultation and sat under the sink, when they went, there was a carper of hairs under the sink. I mad a mental note, do not have a Golden Retriever! They can be stubborn. But also very sweet and gentle, not quite as rumbustious as a young Lab.

Heh, heh 😁

I have known one exactly like that! However, neighbours in next Close have just re-homed a 5 year old Golden Retriever bitch (previous owners gave her up as she was no good for future breeding as she had to have a Caesarian) and the sweetest, most gentle dog I have ever met.

The only Goldie I know well is Rajah, the one I borrow. He has the most incredibly sweet nature - gentle with all people and dogs. However show him a squirrel and he goes into manic hunt mode! He's also extremely 'sniffy' - if he's in the middle of a good sniff you might as well give up hope of moving and settle down for a tea-break. Rajah is also quite nervous of strange/unexpected things - from a carrier bag blowing in the wind to heavy machinery on a building site. If he's off lead he will run away from something that frightens him (he's never a fighter) or if on lead he hides behind me. I'm very drawn to Goldies but the grooming would put me off as Rajah's coat gets tangled quite easily and he takes much longer to dry when wet from rain, puddles etc than a Lab.

I think it's impossible to draw comparisons really between GRs (I've known 2) and Labs really, they are all individuals and the breed traits fairly widely distributed within each dog.
Even just between show bred and working bred Labs there are differences,
Ask a Lab or Golden puppy to do that and it’s just mean.
I don't agree here :) - Cass learnt to sit and wait at a very early stage, I mean from 8 weeks, building up distance to going out of sight.
Off lead heel through high prey areas was huge for her, impossible as a puppy, but sit there and wait no problem!
I often wonder if there is indeed some breed trait at work there, as working Labs are required to do that sometimes it seems xx
