Tip of tail dry and balding

So I just noticed that Aspen has a balding patch at the end of his tail Not only that, but Justen was looking at the spot the other day and noticed that the very tip of Aspen's tail is incredibly dry! It is so dry that the tip could almost poke you, like the carbon tip of a pencil! Upon further inspection, the entire end of his tail is dry, flaky, and all around kind of gross looking! Is there anything I can put on him to moisturize that won't hurt his skin?

Our vet said vitamin E cream is good when we asked about Maxx's dry elbows. It does seem to help

Can you think of what might be causing it to be so dry? Does he nibble it?

I always worry about creams actually creating a focus for licking or chewing.
Tails can be tricky.
I would ask the vet. Sounds a bit unusual.

Can you put a photo on here? Merlin's tail is a bit balder at the very tip too. I try not to obsess about it...
