I want buy a dog book for my brother’s partner for Christmas. They are looking for a rescue dog. She’s being very careful to choose the right dog for them (a small dog). They lost their beloved 16 year old Yorkie, Pepsi, last year and feel ready to start again. She’s looked at lots of rescues so far.

They know nothing about dog training, but they are naturally gentle people and my brother is wonderful with our three (especially Zaba, who adores him). My brother lives with us three days a week as he lives in Bridgenoth and works up here, so the dog will be her companion three days a week, as Pepsi was.

Any suggestions for a good, general book about dogs which she will find interesting and informative?

:)

I have to say I really enjoyed Meet Your Dog by Kim Brophy. I listened to it as an audiobook. It's not a training book, so depends what they're after, but it really does a good job of explaining different types of dogs, their histories and therefore why they do what they do. I think it's one of those books that is worthwhile for any owner. The part on "meet your gundog" was a little thin in terms of HPRs, setters and the like, but I got a lot from hearing about other types of dog that I know less about.

Thanks @snowbunny, I’ll look it up :)

What a good idea Mags. My youngest sister is getting her rescue dog next week, their first family dog. He's a Poodle cross and coming from Romania. I could buy them a good general book. I will be interested to see what pops up here. xx

The Other End of the Leash is always a good book for beginners, too. Patricia McConnell writes very well and again it gives a good understanding of general doggyness without getting too scientific.
