Saves half his carrot for the morning

After dinner, Snowie comes insides and gets a raw carrot to chew on his bed. We've noticed that he leaves half of it, and then, the next day, after breakfast, after he's had his mush of sweet potato and joint/various supplements, and after he's licked whatever needs to be licked (eg if we cooked up a big pot of soup the night before and now decant it into smaller containers, he gets to lick out the soup pot), only then he'll go to his bed, settle down, and eat the rest of his carrot. We are sure he leaves half the carrot, knowing that tomorrow it'll be there for an after-breakfast chew. I am fascinated by how his mind works--does he really plan ahead like I'm thinking he does? I know dogs bury bones to dig up later. He doesn't do this. But leaving a carrot on his bed for tomorrow morning? The modern, urban Labrador?

Molly too saves carrots for later sometimes. She's a monkey for bashing the fridge door with her paw (and yes, it's my fault for intermittently reinforcing the behaviour ;)) If I give her a carrot she'll either eat it immediately, if she's genuinely hungry, or if she's just hoping for something better, she'll keep the carrot till later.
Many years ago my parents had a Westie which hid dog biscuits under rugs and behind floor-length curtains to save for later.

Ah, clever boy Snowie. Wouldn't it be wonderful if we could get a peep into their thought processes now and again and see what they are thinking?
It really does sound as if he's planned it. Molly has all sorts of morning routines but leaving anything edible untouched is definitely not one of them :giggl:

Amazing! Would never, in a million years, happen with my dogs, so I am astounded!!
Yes!

At first we thought he had stopped enjoying his after-dinner carrot because he’d have a few bites and then leave it. I even worried he had a broken tooth! (Hah! He crunches through his raw bones.) But then we noticed he was finishing it after breakfast.

It could also be that he’s too full after supper (bigger meal), but hungrier after breakfast (smaller meal). But who knows a Labrador that stops eating when he/she is full?!!!

I used to give Simba frozen Kongs when we had to leave him, but I don’t anymore as he will often ignore them until we get home and then rush to eat it. Not so good with a frozen Kong in the house.

So now I will leave him with a hard crunchy. Most of the time it’s still there until we get back.

He also will wait until we get home until he drinks his water. Which makes it worrying when we have to leave him for any length of time. :hmm:

Maybe he’s sleeping the entire time you’re out? When you get home and he wakes up perhaps it is then that he remembers to eat and drink?

Snowie very seldom drinks water. Only after walks and meals, sometimes just before bed if it’s particularly hot. When we go out he’s generally passed out, and when we come home he has a squashed face from sleeping!
