Nina Ottoson Dog Smart toys

I thought I’d do a quick review of a new toy we’ve tried - the Nina Ottosson Dog Smart toy, easy level.9CB96654-6EF0-4B0A-9D38-802AA96A665D.jpeg
As Kipper is currently on very reduced exercise while we get to the bottom of his foreleg limp, I’m trying different activities to keep him interested and engaged in the evenings which is his particular busy time.

I’ve always been quite skeptical of Nina Ottosson’s toys simply because although they look well made I couldn’t quite see how Kipper would manage the fiddly small parts, and if he did he’d be far too tempted to chew them.

Well, he did splendidly. Although the toy we have is plastic, it’s robust enough for a firm mouthing and although tricky to get your jaw around, not impossible with a bit of patience. 1E56C71C-2483-4E77-89C4-B368515B6A8F.jpegHere we have Kipper doing a fine job of removing a plastic bone shape to reveal the treat underneath. This was the 3rd time we’ve played this and he was very dexterous (or the mouth equivalent!).

Kipper loves a puzzle, so this actually is very simple for him - each little bone has a hole in the top which enables the dog to sniff if there’s a treat under it or not. Again, I was quite skeptical they could be this discerning given the bones are so close together - but it’s remarkable how quickly Kipper discriminates between bones with treats under them and those without. The bones can be placed in 2 ways, one with slightly less grip available. But this is the only extra stage of complexity this game offers.

I’ll definitely try more of these games. they’re not cheap at around £12 GBP but they’ve got good entertainment value and are a fun addition for dogs with reduced mobility or wanting a slow bit of brain work.

I have used similar games when Joy has needed to be on reduced exercise. She's a clever little girl and used to being kept busy and these tasks that she was set were a Godsend, kept us both entertained and sane. I am hanging on to mine incase they're needed again. I also have lower level games up my sleeve for lesser emergencies. Go Kipper,Go! Have a lovely time ! xxx

Yes, we have 5 of these games which I save for rainy days. Fred and Annie love them. Glad Kipper is enjoying them too.

Thanks Harriet, very interesting. I never cease to be fascinated by their noses so it would doubtless be entertaining for me too!

It's very useful to know about these things, should the need ever arise if Cass has to be on restricted exercise for whatever reason.

And of course, always good to see Kipper :inlove:

Yes the restricted walking can be a pain. I hide things around the house for him to find but it is not the same as a long sniffy walk outside.
Hunter loves this one but he is currently stuck with the pull rope!

@Loraseal Oreo would look at that puzzle toy in disgust, then proceeded to walk away :giggl:
I think Carbon would just eat all of it, including the plastic bits, because they may have some residual food smell. I mean, he's been trying to eat the ripped packets of alcohol wipes that the nurses toss on the floor of the ICU for five days now. He can't comprehend that they are not food...because to him they ARE food.

@HAH interesting to read about Kipper's new puzzle. Plus he's a cutie patootie! 😁

Joy would like that one I think. She seems to enjoy working things out. When Keir came to stay he brought his fancy food bowls with him. Joy had a sniff at them then started biffing at them with a paw. I couldn't think why she was doing this, but Mags who was also there said 'I think she thinks it's an interactive toy' and I realised that she was right, that's exactly what Joy thought it was. Here are Keir and GGJ complete with fancy food bowls. 20210904_192638.jpgThe ordinary stainless steel one is Joy's, poor mistreated little dog!

How exciting! I really hope he likes it. Do you have birthday plans? And can you believe he’s 4 yet??!
We have very exciting plans! Our 'freedom day' is around the middle of October and we have already booked a table at our local dog-friendly cafe on 23/10. Our 29th wedding anniversary is 25/10 and Maxx's birthday is 19/10 so it works out perfectly. We will take a chicken Kong for Maxx and all the staff there love him

I totally cannot believe he is 4 - time is flying

When we booked the table we received a heart-felt thankyou email from the owner. I feel so very very sad for the small business owners but I reckon everyone is so desperate to get out for a meal they will hopefully reap the benefits to make up for the lean lockdown times
