My neighbour and friend’s dog was put to sleep today. I am so sad for her. We have been helping her the past few days as he suddenly wouldn’t get up on Saturday. She thought he was dead and came to our house very distressed. I went round - he was in the garden and my fear too was he was dead - but I called his name and his tail wagged and thumped a bit on the lawn. F and another neighbour helped to get him in her car (he was a very big dog) and F went with her to the vets. He was given painkillers. The vet thinking he had maybe overdone his walking the evening before. She had to take him back again today for tests so F accompanied them.
He was left for blood tests and an ultrasound. She phoned me lunchtime when I was out walking Red to say the vets had rung. They‘d found a huge mass in his stomach and he was in renal failure. The vet said he was in a lot of pain. She’d gone to be with him before I got back off my walk but I was here to hug her when she returned home alone.
He was a Romanian rescue - a Carpathian Shepherd dog and probably about 11. During the almost 4 years she’s had him, we have at times fallen out over her lack of training of him. Some of you may recall posts where I have despaired over her handling of him and how he has upset many in the village……but………he had calmed down this past year or so and she had learnt gradually how to handle him appropriately.
She is going to really struggle without him - he was her world and he had just the best few years with her.
