Huh, that’s interesting. I’ve been to three vets n Regensburg, and they all did it that way. I thought it was just some weird German thing. Apparently it’s a weird Bavarian thing!

This is how they do it in tiny babies (or at least when I was in neonatal unit many moons ago)

I think it's maybe to do with suction pressure and collapsing viens.......Tiny veins collapse easily if suction applied, but stick a needle in and allow blood to drip out can be more efficient
