Oh Kate, I am so sorry for you and Paul and darling little Nelly. I have been away for 10 days caring for my mother who fell and broke her hip, and have not looked at the forum or facebook, so have only just seen this thread. I am appalled and crying here. I won't even go into what I think about the owner of the mastiff, but I can tell you that little dogs like Nelly are true fighters, they have what the Finns call 'sisu' (fortitude in the face of adversity), and they never give up. My best friend's little JRT got into a fight with two other dogs recently and had to have her back leg amputated at the age of 11 - she runs around perfectly happily on three legs! Keep fighting, little Nelly, we are all sending you all positive vibes, we believe you can get through this xxxxxx

It was horrible , like yesterday when I took him to Golitha and got an attack of the vapours . I long for the day Nelly can come with us again but I dont know how I will feel about Golitha ever again xx

It may take a while to feel ok there, or you may decide it’s not worth the stress to go again and find another favorite walking spot. Either is fine - give yourself the space to heal.

It’s all so blimming heartbreaking, but blimey our wee Nelly is a tough little cookie, aided and abetted by you Kate, Paul and Reuben. Think of you every day 
So sorry. Just so unfair that you now have to worry about where to walk on top of everything else. Snowie was once attacked at our favourite walking spot. I actually bought a taser in case he got attacked again. It took a long time to not be nervous of walking there, but I was so angry at the time that my favourite spot had been ruined for me. I still carry the taser in my pouch, although have never used it really—I’ve pressed the button and it makes a loud crackle, which has been enough to stop a dog in its tracks. Except Snowie. True gundog, not fased by the sound at all.

She is back home from the hospital and walking, either using a rollator or a stick, and her mobility seems generally pretty good, all things considered. My brother and his family live five minutes walk away and one of my sisters lives in the next village over, and she has people coming by every day to check on her and to walk her dog, so she is being well looked after. It was hard leaving her though.

She seems brighter, more interested in whats going on around her . I had a very broken night with her as she has been drinking a lot of water, which is good , but has the result of her needing to wee rather a lot, even during the night . She sill has to go out into the garden on her lead but doesnt seem to mind the restriction too much , nor the plastic cone despite my buying a onesie which she hated ! I also have a soft collar but again , she doesnt want to know so we carry on with the plastic for now and I think for some considerable time as her wounds are so damned sore and keep leaking but her amputation wound looks great so she may have the stitches out in a couple of days .
