Update on Reuben

Its been a roller coaster of a ride with our little big boy , and one I thought I might fall off a few times ! But , we progress ! The biting has all but stopped , just the odd gentle mouthing , he has four beautiful grown up teeth now . He seems to be more calm in the house , settles in his bed with no prompting unless we have visitors and then all bets are off ! His recall , rock solid a few weeks ago , began to fail a couple of days ago , not really fail but more a case of " Coming in a few minutes " , so we upped the treats to sausage and bash away . What I am amazed at is that he is mainly leaving Nelly alone , I could swear he knows she isn't too good , would that be silly ? He has discovered the joys of water , and now ploughs into the river , but didn't like the sea at all , not that this worries me , I like a dog to have some natural caution ! Its hard at times to think he is only four and a bit months old , until he foes sloppy and wants cuddles , then he becomes babyish and quite lovely ! The garden will never look the same , I used to take such pride in it but whats the point ? Our pupster seems to enjoy digging little holes , and pruning, oh how he loves pruning !
I do get more tired than I used to , but its getting better and at least he sleeps well overnight ( still on the bed ! ) . He and Nelly rub along nicely , she is definitely the boss which is fine , it teaches him a healthy respect of his elders although he pushes his luck from time to time ! I don't have a crate, but he seems fine to be left in the kitchen behind the baby gate for an hour or two , whilst Nelly has the free run, I imagine her running up to the kitchen and taunting him behind the bars ! Am currently working on attempting to keep him calm in certain situation , such as the Vets ,because like his predecessor , he adores the Vets , but becomes wildly excited , I take him in regularly as they like to see him and it also makes it a stress free environment for him . Next goal is to take him down to Looe before it gets too busy with visitors , he walks around our village but its fairly quiet , Looe is a different kettle of fish . All in all, he is a good lad , time will tell if he degenerates into a hooligan teenager and maybe I will be writing a post whilst tearing my hair out ! xx

It sounds like you're doing wonderfully with him! I'm sure he's picking up on signals from Nelly that she's not feeling her best - dog body language can be very subtle; just a slight tightening around the eyes or ears can be enough for another to pick up on as "Not right now, young'un".
I'm sure he'll be splashing around in the sea and leaping waves in no time - four and a half months is nothing! Willow and Shadow didn't go in a river until they were nine months when they fell in the Thames :D

Your garden will come back, I'm sure. Willow used to be terrible at tearing plants apart, and even at just under two years would dig the occasional hole. She's perfectly trustworthy now.

Yum yum, antirrhinum!

Squidge also ADORES the vet and still gets a little bit silly whenever we go. I'd rather that than have her worried, so I let her play the fool to some extent. I don't want to quash her enthusiasm and the vet loves her - I think she sees so many nervous dogs, it's nice for her to see a hooligan :D

Sounds like you are doing a brilliant job with young Reuben, he sounds an absolute star :star:
, time will tell if he degenerates into a hooligan teenager and maybe I will be writing a post whilst tearing my hair out !
Even if this happens he won't have forgotten what he's learnt now, will he. I think even they appear to have learnt nothing, it re emerges again later on.
But who am I to say that to you?:)

I hope you give yourself and Paul (and Nelly of course) huge pats on backs for hard work :fistbump:. Little Reuben sounds such a little bundle of joy and is a happy, settled little fellow. Like you I like a little bit of natural caution - not nervousness, but an ability to look at a thing and weigh it up before leaping in. Sounds like Reuben brings sunshine to the vets too, may it never diminish! :sun:

It's exciting how he'll grow and develop over the next few months; he'll bring even more pleasure I'm sure (and the odd challenge, possibly!) - very much looking forward to following your adventures!

Lovely to hear how well he's doing Kate, it speaks worlds for all your hard work and patience. Joy also enjoyed 'helping' in the garden, a lot during her first summer (she came to us in June 2017), a little less enthusiasm during summer 2018 and I'm hoping that summer this year will be when I can finally use the garden centre vouchers that were my retirement present from work colleagues on something other than hanging baskets!

Well done, Kate! He’s settled in so well and has made such good progress, thanks to your training. Nelly’s played a big part in that too!

You may well be tearing your hair out if he has teenage tantrums, but of course none of us will have had any experience...! (My two, well past teenagers, have just been having a tug-of-war with a piece of vetbed while I’ve been tying this!)
