And the years rolled off!

We're in Cornwall for a week. We come every year and we all love it including Lady. Lately, however, the SBD has been having trouble with her elbows and on top of it all has taken on all the characteristics of an old dog. Maybe she is, but I would have thought 9 years and 8 months was a little early. Anyway walking is now slow and she runs out of steam pretty quickly. Today we took her up onto the moors at Carnyorth for a picnic lunch and then back to the car - a couple of miles round trip including several Cornish stiles one of which she fell off which didn't help the elbow situation. She was quite tired when we got back to the car so we were in two minds whether to take her to a beach near Pendeen. In the end we did and it was a joy dog wise.

I took off my shoes and socks and had a paddle - it was unusually calm - and Lady followed quite interested in me going in the water. Then we did a few retrieves in the sea and Lady just transformed. The years slid off before our eyes and she was a young dog again. Full of get up and go and play bobbing with much waggy tail. Good old Lady.

She's zonked out in her bed now and rather stiff. But such a nice day.

Aah that’s great. Hope you all have a lovely holiday. Difficult with our older dogs. We are away soon with our two and are beginning to plan carefully for Sky. I suspect when we get to the beach (not sure how we are going to do all that yet), she will become the dog she was - she has always loved the beach and the sea.

We had this with our first lab. She loved to swim in the sea. After a swim she was sleepy and slept quite long. Side effect of swimming was that she was so stiff the next day, that she couldn’t walk. We gave her painkillers beforehand and she was much more comfortable the day after. So don’t be reluctant to give something to kill her pain if she is unable to move tomorrow!

That's lovely for you both, glad Lady enjoyed the water and Cornwall. I've never been there but there are so many nice pictures on this forum it is very tempting.

I think I would hate it in the summer, too many people and the roads just aren't set up for it. But the weeks I was there with Squidge in the winter were absolutely lovely, and the people were so friendly and welcoming. I definitely want to visit again at some point.

Yes, we know someone who stays there in winter and comes back to Essex in the summer because it is too busy.
We have just come back from the North York Moors and stayed in a village with one street and a pub, no traffic, so peaceful, just lovely.

She was fine, thanks. The puppyish behaviour was just a flash in the pan but good to see.
