Leaving a pup for 10 hours.

Some years ago a friend of mine had to have an emergency C section. She sent her husband home to their adult but highly strung Setter who she felt had been alone for longer than usual with the words, 'I understand what's going on, Reuben (the dog) doesn't'. I think it's the thing about her that has most impressed her husband throughout their marriage. He still tells the tale with tears in his eyes after a few drinks.
That's remarkably selfless. I suspect she made a wonderful mum.

As you say @Jen, a puppy is a bit different from an adult dog. That said, we still try to not leave Chewie alone for more than 4hrs, and if we are going to do that we make sure we have some quality time with him beforehand and leave him with frozen kongs and sometimes other treats. After all that he usually snoozes till we get back.

Ugh, I feel so sad for the puppy :'(

I got stuck on a group like this once. Someone asked for help because their pup would steal washing off the line when left outside for a few hours. I suggested in the short term to prevent access and go back to basics leaving the pup for really short periods as their description sounded like pup was getting anxious when left. Someone else suggested balancing buckets of water on the line so that when pup jumped, it would get a nasty cold shock and wouldn't do it again.

Everyone supported the second suggestion

What is wrong with people, this is animal cruelty,
Why the hell do people like this get a dog, it makes me spitting mad!
And there is always someone on facebook who will turn a post into an argument or get abusive or criticise someone else for their opinion. I have left lots of groups because of this, I can do without reading verbal abuse from a load of idiots.
Well done @Boogie for your excellent replies but you won't make this person see sense, they just want an easy solution for themselves and don't seem concerned for the poor pup. Could you report them to someone?

When I was in hospital last year , one of my main concerns was for Nelly as she was being left for very long periods of time , but my two elder grandsons came over numerous times to play with her, feed her and take her for walks . Debbie even took photos for me so that I would know she was alright . My heart aches for dogs like this one who will most likely end up with awful issues , why not just get a fish ?

Keep going @Boogie - I like your tenacity. I just don’t understand how people could leave any dog let alone a puppy for 10 hours. Why bother to have a dog.

I have always felt ill if we ever left Sky over 4 hours. Now we have 2 we just bite the bullet and pay for good daycare

I really respect you for wading into the fight and your ability to deal with the stress of conflict. It's a tough stance to take when others of the group (whom I'm assuming you're well acquainted with after being a member) turn on you. Yours is a very important viewpoint that the other members NEED to hear. Though you are getting the come backs about "Yeah I did this and my dog turned out fine", you still are putting a calm and reasoned anti-argument out there for others to see and think about. The ones who AREN'T commenting are the ones who are the most likely to listen, if that makes sense.

I would be more than happy to help write articles to post here. I'm not the subject matter expert, but given an outline and main points, I can certainly write - that's my profession and I'll have plenty of time to do it once back in Germany at the end of the month. :)

Oh yes please!

The first, I think, needs to be ‘Can I own a Lab when I work full time?’ or words to that effect.

I'm not even going to read this because I know exactly what it is going to be.

I can't bear this sort of thing. Worked with rescues in the past and have virtually come to blows over this utter stupid cruel ignorance. It upsets me so much I can't read these things any more.
I truly believe it should be a lot more difficult to own a dog than it is.

Let's have a phone chat when I get back to Germany. We need to plan our Heidelberg adventure anyway :happyfeet:, and we can add this to the agenda. Maybe beforehand you could have a secret chat with the other mods on how you'd like articles to work and content?
