Beach under threat of a dog ban

Seaton beach , nr Looe has always been a haven for dogs and owners alike . My Granny retired to a house at the back of the beach , I say retired, well she retired from their nearby farm but then ran a B&B in her house at Seaton for many years where she had a dairy at the rear and made her own butter and clotted cream . Its a pace of happy memories for me , my children and now grandchildren , a place we have taken all our dogs with the most wonderful dog friendly cafe right on the beach . Cornwall Council reviews beach status every three years which mainly stay the same unless they receive objections and guess what ?? A very small group ( about 6 of them ) and all recent arrivals to the twin villages of Seaton and Downderry have made objections, just as the three year review is due . I cannot remember a time without seeing the joy of dogs on this beach where the vast majority of owners are responsible . The irony is that there are far more beaches with dog bans than those which are dog friendly , just a few miles away is Looe where a ban is in force all year round .
All we can do is hope , we have a petition going and are attending Parish meetings , I just hope we dont lose another wonderful place to appease a few xx

They are mainly objecting because the fact that the beach is dog friendly is bringing more visitors , there are some beautiful holiday apartments overlooking the sea, all dog friendly like the cafe , and THEY think it should be more exclusive

Oh for goodness sake it's just bloody ridiculous. I hope they don't get their way Kate I really do as that is a magical place to be enjoyed by everyone. I will keep my fingers crossed for you. Exclusive what a load of crap. xx

The white house on the right was Grannys house , so many memories of happy times , we dont want it to be exclusive , we want it to stay just the way it always has been xx

I'm glad you are there to fight to keep the beach dog-friendly. It seems outrageous that six people - newcomers at that - could be so influential.

I can imagine how you feel Kate the memories you must have. Is there anything you can do to get other locals onside, maybe a petition, talk to the Council? You can fight this you all have a voice and it's your beach. xx

That’s so sad. It’s getting more difficult to find dog friendly beaches. They are also generally much cleaner and nicer than a lot of beaches that ban dogs!

Sadly eventually I feel dog friendly beaches will become a thing of the past. Too many irresponsible dog owners spoiling it for the rest of us. I was picking up other dogs poo when we went to the beach near us in Scotland. Not nice. x

We have a stunning beach in Cape Town that is extremely popular, especially come tourist season. Camps Bay beach. The council decided to make one dog-friendly beach per suburb 24/7/365 because they weren’t able to cope with ensuring people stuck to dog visiting times on all the beaches. Camps Bay beach was made a no-dog beach. Well, you should’ve seen the dog walking community act upon that! They claimed they’d been walking their dogs for eons there and were not about to be kicked off the beach. And they won. With a compromise. Summer time must be off between 9am and 6pm, which is fine, cos too hot for a dog to be there anyway. It is quite possibly the loveliest beach to walk your dog. And I see tourists taking loads of pics of the masses of happy dogs. I hope your beach wins it rightful status to stay open to dogs.

I do hope this doesn't go through. People like that moving into an area are an absolute bane. It happens here a great deal, our very rural, agriculture based village has suffered due to the likes of them. It's becoming a dormitory, not the working place it once was.

@kateincornwall I would write to the newspapers and give a history of the beach and dog users, it may help
