My mum’s dog Jambo is much less mobile now, and struggles to get into the back of the car for walks. Our vet/physio made a block out of insulation foam, and I covered it with an old towel and some rubber matting. It should be light enough for my mum to lift in and out of the car, and stable...
This is a lovely piece of work, from Clara Wilson based at Queens University, Belfast. This is directly from her Twitter feed:
“Stress has an odour and dogs can smell it - new paper out! In each test session, dogs were given one person’s relaxed and stressed samples, taken only four minutes...
There’s a new piece of research out that suggests a strong link between the parts of a dog’s brain involved in smell and the parts involved in seeing. There’s a lay article here: Dogs can ‘see’ with their noses, study suggests
I had a quick look at the original paper. It seems to support this...
We’ve had an interesting couple of days with my mum’s dog Zorro. He’s a young adolescent lab, really lovely nature, very active and quite anxious in lots of situations.
Anyway, 2 nights ago my mum phoned me at about 10.30pm to say Zorro was acting strangely and wouldn’t get out of his bed, and...
Kipper has a really good nose, and we’ve done some basic scent training in the past. Once in a while, we’ll play ‘find it’ games in the garden with human scent articles, and other things like treats.
I have a hair pin and ring which I’ve been wearing a lot recently as my hair’s a fair bit...
I'm looking for help with training ideas, particularly from those of you with multi-dog experience and experience of introducing new dogs to established dog households.
In July (a mere 10 weeks away...) we're going to be looking after my mum's two labs for 10 days while she's away. We're...
I found this article really resonated with me and where my thinking increasingly goes when we’re talking about helping our companions to live in a human world. Ditching should is a great place to start for dogs and their hoomans alike.
In praise of naughty dogs
Poor young Kipper is feeling rubbish, he woke us this morning being sick. Worryingly it had a fair amount of blood in it, and he was clearly feeling really rotten with a lot of tummy rumbling. He also had a very loose poo first thing.
We’ve been to the vet who’s thinking virus but keep a close...
We heard today that a rather lovely bitch we know may be mating in May, so we've put our names down for 'let us know what happens'... if the stars align, it'd be a puppy in September time. Plenty of time to prepare Kipper for a little bro :fingers:
I thought I’d do a quick review of a new toy we’ve tried - the Nina Ottosson Dog Smart toy, easy level.
As Kipper is currently on very reduced exercise while we get to the bottom of his foreleg limp, I’m trying different activities to keep him interested and engaged in the evenings which is his...
Our tiny puppy is 4 today! We’re still working out his limp so had two short walks today, but Kipper had a lot of treats, a bit of mackerel for lunch, a new friend Monty Moose and a very exciting ‘find the squirrels’ game!
#1: towing a car out of a ditch
Well technically it was 2 leads to spread the load - but jolly handy when my mum dropped her front wheel into a ditch and needed a bit of a pull  these Halti double ended leads are so useful…
Has anyone come across ACE freework? It’s like T Touch but a step on, in that it uses movement and a dog’s orientation around objects to help improve flexibility, strength etc. Keen to hear anyone’s experiences.
Tonight, Kipper was playing in the garden with OH. They’d just finished, OH went into the house to get a treat to finish the game and Kipper was waiting on the grass. We don’t know what happened, but he squealed in a way I’ve not heard before, rushed into the house and steamed round with teddy...
Tonight Kipper spent the evening with my mum’s new lab puppy Zorro and Jambo, her 9yr old lab.
it was fascinating to see how Kipper was with Zorro; he was very patient, and slowly warmed up to a game of bitey face and - eventually - Zorro zonked out on Jambo’s paw. Very sweet!
This is my mum’s new puppy Zorro :celebrate: We’ve just brought him home, and he’s fabulous. Relaxed, exploring and seems very comfortable all round. Long may it last! I think he may be pretty bold...
Tomorrow my mum’s new puppy arrives. It’s got me thinking over the last few weeks about puppy essentials. We’ve sorted crates, a pen, collar, papoose and sundries; I’ve got him his own lamby (of course), and toys for his big dog brother Jambo.
Is there anything you’d consider essential (or...
I just read this article on parenting How to raise a resilient child | Psyche Guides the gist is that parents can be overly concerned with getting their parenting 'wrong' and not allowing their child to develop independence, so the tendency is to 'over-parent'. The author (a clinical...
I’ve been investigating Kong alternatives, as Kipper gets bored easily and I think finds them quite tricky to ‘work’. Partly this is content, but we prefer to keep it conservative (a bit of wet food plus kibble) so options are limited. I came across the Zogoflex Toppl , tried one and it was a...
