    Gagging, infection on leg.

From what I’ve read, a side effect of antibiotics is an overgrowth of yeast. Although I’d expected that after stopping the antibiotics, not while on them. So, possibly the smell is yeast. Or it could be his anal glands. Or something in his hindlegs—the smell is worse towards his back end. But...

    Gagging, infection on leg.

Thank you @JES72. He himself seems cheerful and wagging his tail. But his skin is terrible. More and more bald spots. Smelly in general. I bathed him today again and he seemed so relaxed after. But also full of energy and took my husband on a long walk on their afternoon walk—he decides where to...

    Gagging, infection on leg.

Did the vet suggest adding some kelp to her diet for extra iodine? I add a minute amount of powdered kelp to Snowie’s mixture (turmeric, crushed pumpkin seeds, veg, etc mush). It’s also a good vehicle for the meds administration!

    Gagging, infection on leg.

I did wonder about thyroid. And Cushings! I’ve considered many things!! We see the vet again on Friday so I’ll talk through all of it then. I’m sorry Poppy is losing her coat. I hope it’s just normal shedding and not thyroid. Please do let us know.

    Gagging, infection on leg.

I do think that labs with thick coats are more suited to cold climates. Perhaps with the Lab you walk it is a climate thing where you are. But I’m in the southern hemisphere so it’s meant to be hot here! All the dogs are shedding a lot here at the moment. But I don’t think this is normal...

    Gagging, infection on leg.

I’m hoping it’s the antibiotics or stress, too. Otherwise, there’s more to worry about!! He’s rubbed his eyes so much they look like panda eyes. And they’re very gummy. I am now cleaning them with cotton wool and black tea several times a day so that he doesn’t feel the need to rub them. It...

    Gagging, infection on leg.

A swab (edited: sorry, not a needle aspirate) was taken from the leg wounds (two—a second smaller one developed on the inside of his leg) to culture the bacteria. Came back with a host of different bacteria. Got new targeted antibiotics. 3 tablets twice a day. Thankfully Snowie is quite happy to...

    The Nullarbor

Wow that was an undertaking!! You are both amazing. I could never drive for so long. We once drove from Cape Town through Namibia, where the roads are long and straight from the border. Nothing to see for hours but wide open space. We said that next time, we’d fly to a central town in Namibia...

    ?Infection

So sorry this happened. Poor Harley and poor you. What awful people. I would’ve videoed them and reported them—do you have a dog warden? Although of course easy for me to say so now; if it had happened to me, I’d have not thought of videoing and would’ve got very upset.

I make my own kefir for Snowie. I read that making your own produces far more bacteria than what comes from store bought. But I use the store bought as a starter. I just add a bit of kefir to a litre of full cream milk and leave it in the pantry cupboard. “Burp” the bottle every day to let off...

    Maxx is sick

So pleased to hear that Maxx is feeling better. When Snowie was about 1.5/2 years old, he had HGE—hemorrhagic gastroenteritis. Basically, bloody diarrhea. The vet called it Garbage Eating Disease, apparently common in Labs. It was a long time ago so I forget the details and how we treated it...

So pleased he ate something. I’d be giving him anything he likes. Have you heard of slippery elm? I’ve not used it with Snowie, but I know some people who swear by it for tummy upsets.

    Maxx is sick

I was listening to a gastroenterologist speaking about this the other day. He said the new thinking is to stop the antibiotics when they’ve done the job, and don’t take for any longer otherwise the gut biome is destroyed. The difficulty is deciding when they’ve done the job.

I’m so sorry. Not even a tail wag is heartbreaking. He must be feeling really nauseas. Have you tried tuna mixed with water? You say he’s drinking. But it might encourage even more fluid intake and a little bit of solids. Or some shredded roast chicken, just a little bit to encourage drinking...
