My goodness, how time flies by , its 18 months since we fetched Nelly , seems like she has been here forever .
Nelly has learned so much, but she has also taught us a lot , mainly that you can teach an old dog new tricks ! Her deafness has not been an obstacle , its just another dimension to her happy go lucky nature , she was willing and eager to learn which has been a joy for me . I have to say that Sam played a massive part in her rehabilitation , she learned much from him and his wise ways . Losing him meant that I had to step up to the plate and take over , she has been so compliant in this changeover . I can now have Nelly off lead in most safe places , the beach was scary at first as it has no boundaries , but in true Nelly style , she keeps checking in , ever watchful as to where I am .
Its been a massive change for me too, having always had a large dog to walk , to train and enjoy , I now have this fluffball weighing in at 4 and a half kilos ! But , she is all dog , has learned what her nose is for and employs it happily in the woods . What a gift she has been , a real pleasure to own and love , she is definitely Pauls dog , choses him over me , his lap to sit on but on walks she is like Velcro , her recall using a whistle is fantastic ! It doesn't matter that she doesn't hear much , she responds to a smiley face by wagging her magnificent tail !
Silas has become bonded to Nelly, which gladdens my heart as he has truly suffered the loss of his best pal , Sam . He and my daughter walk Nelly to the village school most days , him proudly holding her lead , he loves her dearly .
