A little ouchie

Simba has a wee cut that he keeps licking at. I’m not worried about it but I would like to keep him from licking at it. It’s not constant licking, but once and awhile. I don’t want to have to put a cone in for it, so not sure what to do, if anything. Here’s a pic of the general area and a close up of the cut. I can’t upstairs to find him licking so took a pic.

I caved and put the cone on. Figured it can’t hurt to do that, and it will speed the healing. I have some antibiotic gel from the vet that I used the last time he had a wound so that should help too. I texted my vet friend to see what he thinks too, but haven’t heard back from him yet.

That looks sore, but hopefully he is OK now with the cone on. Sure the cream will help and be back to normal no time.

Yeah...allergies are the underlying problem....this episode was kicked off by a swim in some stormwater. The day after this we went away for the weekend and left him with friends and when we got back he had an awful weeping infected sore :(

That looks very much as if it has turned into a hotspot. One of my Clumbers is prone to hotspots and the best methods of dealing with it I have found is to clip the hair on the spot and around the surrounding area right back and clean three times a day with diluted Hibiscrub. It seems to be working better than any cream.

Snowie has had something similar a few times. Feels like it will never heal. I found putting on cream just before a walk is the best cos it has time to sink in. I’ve never put a cone on Snowie and he’s been free to lick and nibble if it’s itchy. I usually just use Apple cider vinegar as a disinfectant. Povidone iodine as well. And Curatex cortisone cream if it’s not getting better—works very quickly, but the vet said not to use too much or too often.

I’ve read differing opinions on shaving the area. Some say if you shave an allergic dog, the skin is too exposed to allergens, which can make it worse. Snowie was shaved once by the vet for an itchy spot. The other times not. I can’t say whether shaving made any difference; I think not.

I don’t actually have clippers, so will trim the hair with scissors. Simba isn’t an allergic dog, thankfully. But it’s impossible to stop him from worrying at a wound, hence the cone. Hopefully this will heal quickly. He’s pretty tolerant of the cone, although this time he did give a little growl at OH when he put it on. :(
