Annual vet check up...ugh...

It was the dreaded yearly check up today. Simba went bouncing in as per usual. Happy to see everyone, including the vet, who is a friend of the family.

...until the exam starts and he turns into a growling snapping monster.

Muzzle on, much growling and struggling as Dr tries to examine the little lump I had found by his tail. Determined it was nothing, phew, but now it’s time for needles.

Dr suggests that perhaps he could get help from one of the assistants so I agree, he takes him into back room and enlists some help. I’m expecting to hear bloody murder from the back but all is silent and i’m barely settled in the waiting room when he’s back. He didn’t make a peep or even move at all when they gave the needle! Maybe the little exam room is stressful? Or because I was there? Who knows.

Well, it’s over for another year, thank goodness. All’s good with the pup except he’s gained a little weight so we know what that means...:|

Enjoying my tea tonight...:whew:

There was an article about “animal husbandry” (title to that effect) where the author said your dog “behaves better” when you’re not around because he’s shut down and terrified. And that he “acts up” when you’re around cos he feels safe to express how he feels. Since reading that, I’ll never let Snowie be taken to the back room to have bloods taken, etc cos I think it’s already a scary place and I’d like to be there to comfort him. Well, I say that! At our annual visit two weeks ago, I was ready and prepared to say “he will not be taken out of my sight” but the vet said no need for blood tests. So, my resolve wasn’t tested after all!

We've just been in the vets this morning for our annual check up and I was very proud of Maisy in the waiting room, she just lay down on my feet and watched all the comings and goings for a good 20 minutes, including mewing cats. Very relaxed and at ease. Then we went in that little room and she immediately hides behind me, obviously afraid. I don't know why as she doesn't flinch from injections or nail cutting or any inspection by the vet. Someone said they might sense the negativity in the room from the previous patient?

Nice to hear Simba is in good shape, Maisy needs to lose a bit too but not as much as I had thought so all good there.
