Arthritis medication

Just generally Kate @Beanwood
Even her legs look "chunkier " whereas before I would say her fur was quite fine.
I do wonder then if this is medication related? As in the fur growing in from a moult is different. I know that very specific changes in a certain area, for example where the spine changes direction, over hips, shoulders ( a ruff where there isn't one normally...) can indicate something amiss in the musculature.
How is Lilly in herself?

My vet has a new type of pain killer and it's an injection Liberla, made by Zoetis.
She has already given it to an older dog and saw a positive change in his mobility and reduction of pain.
So I need to do some reading/research now as Hunter is a young dog with arthritis.

I have heard quite a lot of positive reports from people whose dogs are having Librela injections (two of the owners are vets) @Jacqui-S would this be something to try with Lilly?

I am wondering what the side effects of this drug might be? Thinking of bleeding stomach?
Fortunately there are very few side effects with Librela, as it's not really a drug like metacam, or previcox that puts strain on the organs to process it:

Librela is the first-of-its-kind veterinary medicine that contains bedinvetmab, a monoclonal antibody that binds to Nerve Growth Factor (NGF), a key player in OA pain1 and in doing so reduces pain. It functions like naturally occurring antibodies, with minimal involvement of the liver or kidneys in its metabolism and elimination from the body; bedinvetmab also produces minimal gastrointestinal (GI) impact. After one injection of Librela, dogs with osteoarthritis exhibited increased mobility and decreased pain.

I think Librela might be an "add on medication " hence sticking with the cocodamol.
I'm not sure Librela would be used as monotherapy.
Pretty much, I don't think Lilly is bad enough to be eligible for it right now.

One of the dogs is definitely only receiving Librela and no other pain medication. Is that what you mean by mono therapy?

The reason my vet mentioned it is because the NSAID's can do so much internal organ damage. and I would really like to avoid that.
As it is summer and warmer, Hunter only needs pain killer once or twice a week at the moment.
I already know quite a few people locally using it but their dogs are old and they no longer use NSAIDs. I don't know if it will work on a young dog with arthritis?
@Natalie is the injection just like a vaccination or is it given in the areas where the most pain is?

I've started Ginny on Librela, alongside her Osteopen (the same as Cartrophen). No discernible difference after a couple of weeks, but the vet said in some of her patients it's taken two or three doses to show any improvements. I'm skeptical it'll do an awful lot, to be honest, because it's not "straightforward" arthritis in this case.

Sorry missed this, yes just a standard injection at the scruff of the neck.

Yes, I'm holding out for injection #3 as not sure it's made a huge difference in Monty's case.

Hi
I have just read your messages Natalie re Monty. Have you had to give him anything else alongside the injection? I have been told I may have two choices Galliprant monthly tablets or Librela injections. My 11 year old spaniel is really hobbling now :( Could you keep me posted re your 3rd jab please/

Hi @Maddy welcome to the forum.
The short answer with Librela is that yes, you can give other drugs as well, as they work in completely different ways, though obviously you should speak to your vet about this. So far, I've given meloxicam, paracetamol and tramadol on three different days.

I've got another thread specifically on his Librela injections so you can find out more about our experiences if you are interested:
