Arthritis?

Finn is having trouble walking on uneven paths. We couldn't find a reason why he didn't want to. Until now...I think he has arthritis in his right foot. There are some swollen bones to see which he hasn't in his left foot. When he walks upon an uneven path I think it hurts and is painful. What do you think...?

I can see the swelling. I would get some x-rays done and maybe get his spine hips and shoulders done if he is sedated, it's good to get a good idea how all his joints are. It could be an old injury or just wear and tear. Hope he's ok and that some pain meds and anti inflammatories do the trick

Poor Finn. I agree with Swampy, it needs looking at alongside pain relief - hopefully it’s a simple issue which will clear up easily.

I wouldn't like to definitely say, but Finn's paw looks a little like Rourke's, Rourke's is more pronounced, he has arthritis in both paws and elsewhere.

Poor Finn. Pain meds and anti inflammatory for sure. The change in weather has triggered Hunter's joints too.
If you really want to know, like @SwampDonkey says get the vet to X-ray with sedation. However X-rays don't give the full picture but I think you know all this from your previous fur baby xx.

My sister came along and brought some carprofen. Lets see how he reacts with a painkiller/anti inflammatory….Finn has arthritis in his left shoulder. In April he went under sedation for teeth cleaning and came out with pain and a limp. He probably moved wrongly so his shoulder arthritis played up. Finn had a lot of problems after his sedation, so if we can prevent going under we will. So no X-rays for him under sedation.
Its more a question of what painkillers will help him I guess. He has to have his yearly consultation so I will ask the vet to look at it and give him some pain relief. We have him on a bit of rest, we used to walk with him quite a lot, now he may choose how long he wants to walk and a walk with a sniff is also okay for us (him). We also see to it that the surface is flat with not too much sticks, stones etc.

@Anne123, I can empathise as Rourke is full of arthritis, has had stem cell replacement therapy which might or might not have worked, then developed a distinct limp on his left foreleg. With luck Finn should be able to take anti inflammatories which Rourke can't take. Librela is worth thinking about xx

Have you tried turmeric paste? Good for inflammation.

Also, perhaps trim his nails shorter? Our vet said they should be no longer than the bottom of the pad.

We go every 2 month to the vet to get his nails trimmed. They are very long, hard and deformed. The quick (?) is also almost to the end of his nail. He has this from birth. At the vets they also have difficulty to get them trimmed. I agree they should be shorter, our other labs we had before Finn was nail trimming not an issue….

That turmeric paste, is it something you buy or is it self made?

I’m so sorry about his nails. That does make it very difficult. Snowie also has a deformed nail on each front paw. Very difficult to cut.

I make the turmeric paste. Very easy to make. You can Google “golden paste” for a recipe. Basically cook turmeric powder with water for 8 mins. Let cool and add black pepper and oil. Give a teaspoon per day. Goes off quickly so freeze in small batches. I mash it with veg for Snowie. He’d lick it, but very messy that way!!

Golden Paste Recipe
Ingredients

• 1/2 cup organic turmeric powder
• 1 to 1 1/2 cups filtered or spring water
• 1 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper
• 1/4 cup organic MCT oil or ghee*

Directions

1. Mix the turmeric with 1 cup of the water in a pan. Save the remaining water in case you need it to thin your paste a bit.
2. Stir the liquid on low/medium heat for about 7 to 10 minutes. It should form a thick paste in this time.
3. If the paste gets too thick, add a little more water.
4. If the paste looks watery, add a little more turmeric and heat it for another couple of minutes.
5. Once your paste has thickened, add the pepper and oil and stir thoroughly.
6. Allow the mixture to cool.
7. Place it in a jar with a lid and store in the fridge.
8. It’ll keep for up to 2 weeks.

After that, you’ll need a new batch.

PS, it doesn’t help the stiffness - exercise does that, as far as it’s possible with knobbly joints. But it’s a miracle worker on the pain.

I have given him carprofen for 4 days and he reacted well on this. As I don’t want him to get NSAID too often or the rest of his life I asked a e-vet what was wise to give him. He or she told me to give Puurdolor. I bought it and he does well on it. You see that he still has some trouble walking, but much better then it was. We walked two days in a row 4 km in the woods, without him complaining. So hopefully it will last with these drops. I also bought him a posh bed, an orthopedic Bia bed. After all it is almost 4th of October!

Don’t look at the wall….it’s covered with Finn’s drool and we can‘t get is cleaned unless we paint it over. Useless while Finn is still drooling a lot….
