Autumn Trip to Gran Canaria (aka Helmsdale, Sutherland)

This is our last day of our holidays and we took it a bit easy in preparation for the long drive home tomorrow.
We nipped into Helmsdale for our lunch first and had a wee wander around the harbour area.
It is really pretty with loads of traditional small fishing boats ( who catch the wonderful fresh haddock we ate for dinner the other night)

We went up a side road inland to a place called Doll, as there were a number of geocache. At the end was a FORD across the river. Not one of your gentle little shallow fords, oh no. We parked up and took the footbridge. There looked like there was a nice walk up the far side of the river (River Brora), all the way up to Brora Loch. Another time perhaps.

We then headed down to Golspie where we were planning on doing The Big Burn Walk.
It was a nice meander up the burn on leafy paths. We missed the best of the waterfall at the end as we took the high path rather than the low one, but it was thundering down.
The water here looks so so dark having cone through the peat.

Our walk took almost an hour and a half as we were looking for a couple of geocache and then got lost coming back down. The path just disappeared. Rather than doubling back, we just winged it :giggl:

There were about 6 or 7 wooden bridges crossing back and forth.

Wow! What a lovely walk! You’ve certainly been so lucky with the weather - it’s been another drizzly day down here! Thanks for sharing your holiday!

If you didn't pass through fords in some parts of the uk you'd never get places 😂 but most are innocuous, just a couple of inches much of the time . And I think they are becoming less common now.
I know... 😁 We are getting a lot of those ads here because it’s coming into a rainy summer and will be a big cyclone season, meaning flooded roads up and down the east coast, and idiots driving into them...

Yes, I particularly remember fords as part of my childhood holidays, with my Dad saying every time 'Can we 'aford' to do this?' accompanied by groans from the rest of us. They seem to be a rarity nowadays.
