I really appreciate all the messages and stories of similar experiences. Very reassuring.
Finally... Snowie is actually sleeping. He has been crying non-stop. And insatiable, drooling long strands of drool. Actually, my husband was so relieved when he came to beg at supper—“acting normally”! Otherwise, unsettled and whining and crying. We’re not sure if he’s just being vocal in a weird way without the associated emotions, because when I was giving him a massage and scratching him with my fingernails, he loved it and was delirious with joy, but instead of his usual groans of delight, he was crying in a high pitch, a different voice to normal.
It’s been an extremely stressful afternoon and evening. He even cried on our short walk (not allowed more than around the block after the joint X-rays). At home, I played scent games (find a treat) and while he was focused, he didn’t wag his tail as usual when he found the treat. Expression was deadpan. Only wagged his tail when my husband tried to entertain him with funny walks, but quickly went back to crying. I tried an old song he likes to “dance” to, and he got excited and barked loudly but made weird high pitched sounds and cries, seemingly excited and he did wag his tail, but could’ve also sounded distressed. All I can say is THANKFULLY he’s finally asleep. I sent a video of him whining to the vet and she said it’s the sedation. What is it doing to them?? When I had a GA two years ago, I came out of it very relaxed and happy. Why would sedation have this effect on a dog? I find it very worrying. I hope Snowie never has to be sedated again, he has appeared extremely distressed, and he is usually so happy-go-lucky.
