Batting to go out but then jumping away

Aspen bats at the door to get let out. Lately, he has been batting and whining. We always let him out when he asks. The last three days, he has been asking to go out at least 10 times each hour and then when we open the sliding door to let him out he quickly hops away from the door like he's scared. It's really kind of annoying and I don't know what his deal is. I think he just wants to go out because maybe he is bored? But if he does choose to go outside, it's either for a really, really long time and he plays and sniffs and jumps around, or it's for a quick pee then back inside. Why?!

We have a cat flap that Hunter pushes to go out and wee. Now he will not wee in the garden and only during walks. So he pushes the cat flap for attention. He does it and he knows he gets a response. Not sure if Aspen is scared or bored? Is there something nesting near the door maybe? Can't really help you. Sorry.
