Beds.

Well, the decision has been mulled over and finally made and I settled for a Baavet bed, because as @Selina27 mentioned it was firm but not Memory Foam (which Joy previously refused to sleep on.)
I was torn between the medium and large sizes, eventually settling for medium, as the measurements were the same as Joy's current bed.
When it arrived I put it inside a clean but now redundant duvet cover incase I needed to return it, which is just as well, because I did! Although the measurements were the same as her old bed, the new one was much firmer ( which I'd wanted, due to her arthritis), so whilst it was fine while she was curled up, she wasn't comfortable when it came to sprawling out on her back, which is how she always ends up. This meant posting it back, which was a bit of a palaver and cost over £14.00! I was somewhat in two minds about ordering another, incase she didn't like that one either, but thought I'd give the larger size a try, as I'd really liked the supportive feel of the bed and thought it might help with Joy's arthritis. Well, I have to say that I've been impressed with how pleasant and helpful the people at Baavet have been during our telephone conversations, and also with their prompt responses. Joy's larger bed arrived today, just two days after I returned the medium sized one. I have again put it inside an old duvet cover incase it needs to be returned and have put her familiar smelling blanket and old cushion on it and after a couple of suspicious looks at me, a spot of sniffing and only a small amount of digging , it looks as if she's happy with her new bed! Success!😀🥳❤ Thankyou all for your advice!20240416_210701.jpg

How very sensible!
It's good to read that you had such good service from Baavet Candy. Good thing the larger size is more to Joys liking.
I was anticipating that she would be suspicious of a new bed. We can go to stay somewhere else and she settles perfectly happily into whatever is provided for her to sleep on (she's very polite!) but at home it has to be exactly right and must be inspected and sniffed Veryvery thoroughly before it's awarded the GGJ seal of approval!

Haha, I have a friend who has a GSD -- it took her 3 years to decide to even get on a new bed let alone sleep on it!

Yesterday I had to pick up a beautiful golden Lab who had got herself in a very dangerous situation and was wandering about on a busy main road, I was able to clip on my long line which just happened to be in the front of my car, and put her in the back of mine.
She was very reluctant to get in, she seemed to be very suspicious about Cassie's travelling bed but really that was not the place to be fussy!
She had a name tag on so I was able to quickly find the farm where she lived, she very happily jumped into the back of the farm truck, obviously much more her mode of travel! Open top and all that!

Looking for a new bed for Fred, his arthritis is getting worse. Did you get a bed with sides @Candy for GGJ or not.

Thanks
We have recently removed the bolster part of Lilly's bed, as it "eats into" the space she has for settling down.
Her arthritis is pretty bad now.
She definitely prefers the orthopaedic style bed with the egg box foam layer on top, but she just needs more room.
Worth bearing in mind maybe.

I was leaning towards a two side only bolster or a simply flat bed before I decided just to remove to bolster and cover on her existing one, and bought a child small cot waterproof mattress cover for it. Just covered in a blanket. She seems to prefer this now.

(I use a rolled up blanket to put at the back of the bed to protect my wall.....)

Thanks @Jacqui-S, he usually sleeps on the sofa although there are 4 dog beds around. He finds it hard to get onto the sofa now.
Poor boy. Could you get him a step for the sofa instead? We have a heavy, firm covered piece of foam—a block—that Snowie uses to get onto our bed.

We’ve got one of the Omlet bolster beds Large Dog Beds | Omlet which Kipper uses on and off, and a George Barclay mattress Dog Beds On Sale: SAVE Up To 30% which he uses most nights. He mainly sleeps on our bed, we’ve built a small platform with a dog ramp which he has learned to use brilliantly - we did it step by step as he wasn’t sure to begin with, and we wanted him to use it slowly and safely. It gives us very little room round the bed, but we’re going to move for a bigger room and in the meantime, we make do!

Sorry to hear that poor Fred's Arthritis is getting worse, Cath. I spent quite a while trying to choose a new bed for Joy, for the same reason, and after much humming and hahing and asking around I decided on a Baavet bed, as recommended by @Selina, I seem to remember. It was definitely not one of the cheaper beds available, but Joy likes it, seems to find it very comfortable and a year on it has kept its shape and firmness well, and is still very supportive, so I'm pleased with it. One word of warning though, the calculator provided by Baavet to work out which size is best for your dog said that Joy would need a medium, and when it arrived I felt it was too small for her, as she only fitted into it when she curled up, whereas she tends to be more of a sprawler!

The covers are also removable and washable.20250207_210017.jpg

Just realised I haven't answered your question properly! Yes, the Baavet bed does have sides, and I think they're partly what give her the support. However there's also room for her to stretch out and not use them if she prefers. Just now she's using the supportive sides and looks very comfortable. 20250422_194414.jpgAnd if anyone's thinking all this is just an excuse to post photos of Joy looking Veryvery sweet in her bed, well.......there may just be a grain of truth in this!☺

Yumove wrote an article. I have the joyelf for Hunter. The sides are squidgy and Hunter's fat head has made the front flat. The decent foam beds are pretty expensive but the memory foam really does help.
