Has anyone used this for their dog?

Red had her 6 month well being check this morning. We had quite a long wait at the vets as a dog before us was having his nails clipped. The owner took him into the consulting room and then made a quick escape back into the waiting room. Bless him, he was not happy and was whining, barking— you’d have thought something really awful was going on in there. Red was her usual calm, relaxed, lying down whilst all this was going on - bless her she’s always so good when we go to the vet (despite all the things that were done to her when she was so ill in April).

Anyway, I digress……when we finally got into the nurses consultation room, the nurse asked if I had any concerns which I have. When we went to the Outer Hebrides, a week into our journey Red became very anxious travelling. She was panting and at times trying to dig. It was very distressing for all of us and came out of nowhere (bumpy twisty turny roads on the OH?). We have done thousands of miles and she has always lain down and slept mostly behind the passenger seat. She’s in her travel harness and secured by a strap and her lead. I tried sitting in the back with her - didn’t help. In the end she travelled under my legs in the front which was not ideal for me but she was calmer (but not necessarily safer in case of an accident). We hated seeing her like this as can only assume she has developed motion sickness which must be absolutely awful for her.

When we recently went to the coast, I used a calming wipe on her and sprayed the van in places with a calming spray. The journey was only two hours. She immediately came through to the front and under my legs but was much much calmer and slept for part of the journey.

Sorry this is turning into a long post. Anyway, I mentioned this to the vet nurse and we had a good discussion. I want to try a calming collar and I know they have to be put on a few days before a journey…….but she wouldn’t need it other than travelling and I dont know if these can be stored for future use.

The nurse also suggested Calmex tablets (don’t really want to be giving her tablets). She said they have worked really well with her dog who gets anxious travelling.

We have lots more adventures planned but both of us don’t want Red to be distressed (she always has a great time at our destinations). Any thoughts would help us plan proactively to help her through this

Sorry Alison I have not tried Calmex, but Fred does gets travel sick now he is older. I get Nozevet from our French vet and they do help him. He will lay down now while travelling and doesn't pant anymore. He will not go to sleep though, Annie sleeps all the way not trouble. He has only started this in the last 18 mths. I don't know if you can get these tablets off your vet. We did try and calming collar with Fred and it did help a bit. but not as good as the tablets. Sorry Red is unhappy and hope you can sort something out for her.

Found this on line Alison

Nozevet is a brand name for an anti-emetic (anti-nausea) medication for dogs and cats, available in the UK. It is used to prevent or treat motion sickness in pets. Nozevet contains dimenhydrinate and is available in tablet form.

Does Fred have any side effects taking these?
No Fred is fine on these.

Thank you Cath for your support. Yes I know her weight. I have been faffing around trying to create accounts….but I have managed to place an order with the company you show. They are restocking but have accepted my order so hopefully not too long to wait.

Thank you @Joy - will bear this in mind. Also will get a Zenidog collar if tablets not arrived before next journey.

Interestingly, there are no issues when she travels in my car but they are generally very short journeys. She was happy to jump in yesterday when I took her to the vets

Another thing we did was because Fred would stand up and pant all the journey, we brought him a Washable Donut bed for the car. It was only off ebay for about £20. We sprayed it with Adaptil Transport spray 20 mins before we get in the car. Fred doesn't stand anymore and will lay down on his bed which is a great improvement.
I know this seems like alot, but it is a 8 hour journey to France and he is more settled. We hate to see our boy upset.

The donut bed arrived yesterday. Red stepped in it for 30 seconds and she has ignored it since 😂. However, it is very hot so in a way I don’t expect her to show any interest as she is just wanting to stretch out on the floor. We are just going to leave it where it is and I’m confident that she will get in it at some point and like it ❤
