Carbón beats heartworm: treatment and recovery journal

PetdrugsOnline are definitely cheaper for the stuff we have used before - mostly Previcox and Bravecto, even factoring in the prescription costs.
These are expensive drugs.
Doxy is cheap as chips here though
Thanks, Jac. I checked out Petdrugsonline and indeed, Advocate is less than half the price of online here in Germany. Unfortunately the shipping to Germany doubles the price and they won't send a shipment to the UK if the script is from Germany. Argh.

The doxy seems to be exponentially cheaper in the UK - at least online pharmacies - but they don't accept Germany scripts or delivery. Argh again.

Can I help at all @Emily_Babbelhund ?
As in a proxy delivery address?
Thanks, Jac but the issue is the German script. I'll be passing through @Beanwood in just a few weeks and Kate is great about letting me mail stuff to her place, so that's not a problem. I appreciate the offer, though. :)

What I might do is go ahead and fill the German script here but get UK script versions during my stay in Cornwall. Then I can load up on the meds in the UK before heading back to Germany. @kateincornwall already recommended a great vet and I'll want to check in with him anyway once we get down there. Despite the Leish and heartworm, Carbon is quite healthy, but taking so many meds, I want to make sure a local vet is aware of his situation in case of emergency.

I used to do the same 'trial run' with Brogan when he was older - it's like some weird veterinary tourism, checking out the local vet and introducing yourself in each new country. :D

Ok, this is of no interest to anyone but me...not that that has ever stopped me. :giggl:

So I got my German internet drug order all ready to go. After all my hand-wringing and price comparing, they will not fill a script for an animal, even if it's a 'human' medicine. It is actually against German law to send 'animal medicine' through the post. I pointed out that it was HUMAN medicine, just that it was going to a DOG. No dice. Gotta love that German literalness.

I'm thinking 'Oh my gosh, it's going to cost twice the amount we're-all-going-to-die!!!' (I'm a little high strung these days) as I'm basing the cost on what I paid for just a two week supply at the vet's.

Nothing to it, Carbon needs his meds. I chucked him in the car and we drove down to the old town where I know every pharmacy like the back of my hand. I chose one that's a little bit bigger than my usual cozy favourite but that I know is a bit cheaper.

The nicest man helped me. I explained the whole story - mainly why I wasn't getting the script filled at the vet and why I needed THIRTEEN boxes of doxycycline. Long story short, it's all coming on Monday and it was slightly CHEAPER than the online pharmacy...which wouldn't sell to me anyway.

So there you are...sometimes the old fashioned solution is still the best solution.

Just a short (yeah, ha ha) update on Carbon. He's been on prednisone for five days now and had his second monthly spot on moxidectrin treatment yesterday. He stinks of chemicals but otherwise he doesn't seem to have any adverse reaction. He's a tough pup!

The prednisone makes him wee like a race horse and seem even more desperate for food than normal, both usual side effects of steroids. I'm happy to say that he's had no behavioural changes. I'd always heard that some dogs become more aggressive on prednisone, so was watching for that in his on lead reactivity. He's been just fine, however, even having some really positive on lead reactions to dogs that normally would get him going.

A funny side effect of the prednisone has been that his recall is PRISTINE. I've been able to whistle call him away from situations that he would have ignored me in last week. Two pips and he turns on a dime. I guess that's the positive side to "I'M STARVING!!!!". I don't expect it to last, however, and in fact will be relieved to see him go back to his usual more distractible self as it will mean the prednisone is out of his system.

Two more weeks of doxycycline before he gets his first three week 'drug break'. It's no bother at all to give him the drugs - he eats them down like treats - but I'll be happy to know his body gets a break from all the antibiotics.

How much to let him exercise is still a source of stress and self-doubt for me. All I can do is hope I'm getting it right and hope it's the right balance between physical and mental health. For the moment he's a happy boy and looks shiny, sleek and healthy...so far,so good! :)
